NEWS FROM TRAVEL MICHIGAN VICE PRESIDENT GEORGE ZIMMERMANN

Last night was a great night for the Pure Michigan campaign, as we were awarded two Mercury Awards by the U.S. Travel Association and the National Council of State Tourism Directors.  The campaign was recognized for having the best radio advertising and the best television advertising among the 50 states.  We are thrilled by this continued national recognition for Pure Michigan.  As always, a tip of the hat to the team at our advertising agency, McCann Erickson, who both created the campaign in 2006 and have kept it fresh and relevant year after year.

You might recall that last year we won an unprecedented five Mercury Awards out of 12 categories, which prompted a new rule for the Mercury Awards – a rule I will always refer to as the "Pure Michigan rule."  This year, no state could win more two Mercury Awards.

Congratulations are also in order for four new appointees to the Michigan Travel Commission.   Governor Snyder has appointed Christian Overland, Stephen Kircher, Camille Jourden-Mark and William Parlberg to the commission.

Christian Overland is the executive vice president of The Henry Ford, and has worked for the organization since 1992. He is responsible developing and implementing the programs for Greenfield Village, Henry Ford Museum, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, IMAX and Benson Ford Research Center. He replaces Patricia Mooradian.

Stephen Kircher is president of Boyne Eastern Operations at Boyne Resorts. He is responsible for overall management of the company and of development operations at facilities in Michigan, Montana, Maine, New Hampshire and Tennessee.  He replaces Frank Ettawageshik.

Camille Jourden-Mark is vice president and general manager of Michigan’s Adventure. She has more than 30 years of experience in tourism marketing and promotions in Michigan.  She replaces Jerry Preston.

William Parlberg is president and chief operating officer of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth. He oversees the operations of the company’s restaurant, Splash Village Hotel & Waterpark, Fortress Golf Course and Zehnder’s Retail Division.  He replaces Judy Zehnder Keller.

I also want to publicly recognize and thank Patricia Mooradian, Frank Ettawageshik, Jerry Preston and Judy Zehnder Keller for their years of service to the industry and the commission.  All four of these industry leaders devoted countless hours and energy to the commission during its recent resurgence.  This commission guided the industry through the implementation of the first Michigan Tourism Strategic Plan, as well as securing the funding for the most recent strategic plan and charting a path for its development and implementation, now underway.  Patricia and Judy also provided leadership as the chair and vice-chair of the commission.  Again, thank you Patricia, Frank, Jerry and Judy for all you do and have done for the Michigan tourism industry.

The Michigan Travel Commission meets next on Friday, September 20th at 10:00 a.m., at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, 187 Monroe Avenue NW, Grand Rapids.  Tourism industry attendance and participation at Travel Commission meetings is always encouraged.

Safe travels, always.
George
