Mentors Needed for Spring Shifting Gears

The spring session of Michigan Shifting Gears, a three month career transition program for seasoned professionals begins on April 16. As part of the program, each participant is matched with a mentor. We are recruiting mentors for the participants. If you are interested in mentoring, please register here. As part of the mentoring process, we host ‘mentor connections’ - timed networking events that take place during the first week of the program - at regional partner host locations. These networking events provide the opportunity for volunteer mentors and program participants to meet each other and determine a good fit. The mentor connection events will take place on Thursday, April 18 from 8 - 9 a.m. at regional partner host locations (TBD). A light breakfast is provided.

MENTOR

  • The ideal mentor is familiar with the small business environment.
  • A mentor should attend the mixer, if available, and then provide approximately 2 hours of support each month during the program through phone calls, emails and face to face meetings.
  • The responsibilities of the mentor include providing a sounding board, advice on career topics and selectively introducing the mentee into your network.
  • In return, the mentor gains the satisfaction of making a BIG difference in someone’s life, helping to retain key talent in Michigan, broadening of your own network, and the gratitude of Michigan Shifting Gears program participants and supporters!

Workforce Innovations Fund Portal is Launched

A new Workforce Innovation Fund (WIF) Portal is now available at http://innovation.workforce3one.org to connect you to the innovations and best practices implemented and evaluated through the WIF Grants. The WIF Grants are an investment of $146.9 million in competitive four-year grants to 26 grantees across the nation by the U.S. Department of Labor, designed to improve the performance of the country’s workforce system by determining what works and building a body of evidence-based practices within the field of workforce development.  On the new WIF website, you can learn about the grantees’ progress toward implementing successful training approaches, their challenges, and opportunities to adopt these innovative practices in your own state, region, and local area.

Further, you can learn about a new financing model called Pay for Success, which helps governments target limited dollars to achieve a positive, measurable outcome. Under the Pay for Success model, a government agency commits funds to pay for interventions that have demonstrated success in delivering social and economic outcomes for individuals, families, and communities most in need.

Whether you’re a grantee or a workforce system stakeholder, the WIF website has something for you – and we encourage you to dive right in!
