This week is a big week for Pure Michigan, with the Pure Michigan 400 Sprint Cup NASCAR race taking place at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday August 19. We are the only state tourism office in the country that sponsors a NASCAR Sprint Cup race, giving us access to the approximately 75 million NASCAR fans across the U.S. We saw tremendous publicity results from the first Pure Michigan 400 last year, and we expect to see the same this year.
New this year is the Pure Michigan 400 sweepstakes, with the grand prize – a custom 2012 Pure Michigan 400 Roush Stage One Mustang – to be awarded on Sunday at MIS. More than 72,000 consumers entered the sweepstakes, with 39,000 of them also signing up for the Pure Michigan eNewsletter. Michigan rocker and booster Kid Rock is serving as our Grand Marshal on Sunday, and WJR's Paul W. Smith, also a great supporter of our state, will be the Honorary Starter for the race.
We will use social media to maximize the Pure Michigan 400 opportunity this weekend, and digital marketing continues to be a significant part of our promotional efforts. We just passed 400,000 fans of Pure Michigan on Facebook, and we now have more than 500,000 consumers who subscribe to our twice-a-month eNewsletter. We have 94,000 fans on Google+, and another 34,000 on Twitter, plus a new presence on Instagram and Pinterest – all great promotional vehicles.
