Detroit to Host National Veterans Hiring Fair, June 26-28 at COBO

Join the VA and your fellow veterans at the free Veteran Hiring Fair in downtown Detroit's COBO Center from June 26 to 28, 2012. More than just a typical job fair, the event offers:
  • More than 22,000 career opportunities at federal agencies and the private sector.
  • Workshops on interviewing skills and building a federal resume.
  • Career coaching.
Admission is free. You'll need proof of military status to enter, such as a military ID card, VA ID, VA hospital card, DD214, or benefits letter.

Shifting Heroes Helps Veterans Be Successful in Their Career Transition

Shifting Heroes is a new option recently added to the Michigan Shifting Gears (MiSG) career-transition program.  MiSG is an innovative three-month transformation program for experienced, professional talent that helps prepare them to be successful in their career transition.  Shifting Heroes provides an additional level of support to veterans, focusing on how the skills and experiences acquired during military service can translate into the private sector.  To learn more about Michigan Shifting Gears, click here.

Apply Now for 12 Months of Job Training Assistance

The Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) is now accepting applications on a first come, first served basis. VRAP, a joint program of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Labor, offers up to 12 months of training for in-demand jobs to unemployed veterans beginning on July 1, 2012. The VRAP program is open to veterans who:
  • are at least 35 but no more than 60-years old
  • are currently unemployed
  • received an other than dishonorable discharge
  • are not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program (e.g., the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance)
  • are not in receipt of VA compensation due to unemployability
  • are not enrolled in a federal or state job training program
The program is limited to 45,000 participants from July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012, and 54,000 participants from October 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014. Participants may receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the monthly full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill–Active Duty program (currently $1,473 per month.) DOL will offer employment assistance to every veteran who participates upon completion of the program.
Participants must be enrolled in a VA-approved program of education offered by a community college or technical school. The program must lead to an Associate Degree, Non-College Degree, or a Certificate, and train the veteran for a high-demand occupation, as determined by the Department of Labor. MDOT Announces Wounded Veterans Internship Program

The Michigan Department of Transportation is introducing a new program focused on helping wounded military veterans transition into the civilian workforce. The Wounded Veterans Internship Program offers wounded veterans paid internships at MDOT facilities throughout the state and is federally funded by the Federal Highway Association.  Read more here.
