The Keweenaw Peninsula
Fall Color: 20-40%
Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 3-10, 2025 Fall colors are popping in the mid-central region of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Other parts of the Keweenaw are still developing, but visitors can enjoy the free tour at Open Skies Project – a former Air Force Station – which has incredible views! Warm fall days are made for easy hikes to Keweenaw waterfalls with more water flowing from recent rains. Must-visit waterfalls include Hungarian and Eagle River falls. The lovely weather and warm winds off the lake are stirring up the shorelines, creating perfect conditions for hunting agates.

Marquette
Fall Color: 20-40%
Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 10-17, 2025 Explore seemingly endless hiking and biking trails for all skill levels through forests of fall foliage. This includes the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, which offers panoramic views of the landscape and Lake Superior, and the Ore Heritage Trail that brings the region’s iron range history to life. Munising
Fall Color: 20-40%
Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 12-19, 2025 Located on the shores of Lake Superior, Munising offers coastal views and beautiful fall foliage. Go hiking along the lakeshore of Lake Superior, or explore the Munising Bay Trail Network (MBTN). If Munising is a stop along a fall road trip, take a relaxing drive along H-58 or I-94 to view fall colors. Before the sun sets and a spectacular stargazing show begins, go on a Pictured Rocks sunset boat tour with Pictured Rocks Cruises.

Manistique

Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 3-10, 2025 On the shore of Lake Michigan, experience a relaxing fall getaway in Manistique. Hike trails in the Rainey Wildlife to immerse yourself in fall colors, or glide down the Manistique River on a canoe to admire changing foliage from the water. At Palms Book State Park, board the self-operated observation raft on Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as the Big Springs, to peer down into the crystal clear waters of Michigan’s largest natural spring.

The Petoskey Area

Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 13-20, 2025 In the Petoskey area, inland areas have more fall color than trees closer to the lakeshore. Visit Uncle Frank's Apple Town north of Alanson for some fresh apple cider, cinnamon donuts, pumpkins and try your luck navigating their corn maze! Near Charlevoix, take a Fall Color Cruise on Round Lake or Lake Charlevoix with Little Traverse Bay Ferry Co. For some harvest season excitement, stop by Pond Hill Farm to smash pumpkins and go pumpkin bowling – and afterward take a scenic drive to see the color progression in the area.

Oscoda

Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 12-19, 2025 Located along the eastern edge of the Huron-Manistee National Forest on the shore of Lake Huron, Oscoda offers endless opportunities for exploring fall foliage. Visit Lumberman's Monument for unforgettable views above the Au Sable River and hike the Highbanks Trail – a designated Pure Michigan Trail. Or, climb the stairs along the Iargo Springs Interpretive Area to discover natural springs, interpretive signs and stunning river overlooks.

Gaylord
Fall Color: 20-40%
Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 6-13, 2025 Fall in Gaylord is all about traditions and seasonal favorites. Local farms, both generational and new, offer hayrides, pumpkin patches, cider, donuts, farm animals and even unique animals like yaks.
This is also peak season for viewing elk activity. The new viewing platform and trail at Elk View Park give you a great view of the herd, and their bugling calls are something you won’t forget. Aspen Park is another great spot for a quiet walk with a chance to see them. Scenic drives are another fall highlight in the northern Lower Peninsula, with backroads and rolling hills full of color this time of year.

Estimated Peak Fall Color: October 13-20, 2025 Take a fall float or paddle down the 72-mile-long Chippewa River in Mount Pleasant to soak up beautiful fall color. If you don't have your own equipment, use Buckley's Mountainside Canoes to rent for all of your trip needs. Or play a round of disc golf at Deerfield Nature Park, which offers over 8 miles of hiking and biking trails that weave you around the Chippewa River and two disc golf courses.
