michigan shifting gears

Stop thinking and start doing. Michigan Shifting Gears is a career-transition program for seasoned corporate professionals who want to pursue opportunities in business growth sectors where they can leverage their business knowledge and experience in new ways.

Michigan Shifting Gears’ upcoming April 30 session also marks the launch of a new feature of the program, Shifting Heroes. Shifting Heroes will provide additional career development support to veterans, focusing on how to translate their military experience into the private sector. In addition, Shifting Heroes will include one-to-one mentoring by a veteran who is employed with a Michigan company, as well as provide opportunities to make direct connections with employers that are specifically interested in hiring veterans and are committed to creating a supportive professional environment for their veteran employees.

Registration for the Spring 2012 program (Cohort 10) has been extended to April 23, and eight additional Q&A sessions have been scheduled. Visit here to see the full schedule.

To learn if this innovative program is right for you, first watch a 45-minute informational overview webinar and then take part in a follow-up question and answer session (both required for participation in the program) with one of the Michigan Shifting Gears program facilitators.

Michigan asparagus growers are ready to hire

asparagus
It’s only April, but Michigan trees are budding, flowers are blooming, and asparagus is popping up early on the state’s produce farms. Michigan’s asparagus growers are looking to hire hundreds of farm workers in the next two weeks to begin harvesting this year’s crop.

To help growers find the workers they need, the State of Michigan Workforce Development Agency is teaming up with the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board to host an Asparagus Industry Job Fair TOMORROW from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Hall, 2349 W. Jackson Rd. in Hart, Mich. Read more.

liveworkdetroit!

During the 2011–2012 school year, LiveWorkDetroit! (LWD!) brought over 1,000 college students to Detroit over a series of events to experience firsthand the employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, lofts, museums, urban farms, arts and cultural centers, and other sights of Detroit.

The initiative also grew its LiveWorkDetroit! Student Ambassadors (LWDSA) program, engaging and empowering college students to represent LWD! on campuses in- and out-of state. Launched in September 2011, the LWDSA grew to 55 students in 14 campuses, with three campuses establishing official LWDSA student organizations: University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Michigan State University. These student leaders are collaborating together with the MEDC to create meaningful experiences on- and off- campus with Detroit, support 2012-2013 LWD! events, and promote Detroit as a hot post-graduation destination.
