This Just In – CATeam Edition

Welcome to the new This Just In – CATeam Edition, a quarterly e-update for communities and developers. To borrow a phrase from Governor Snyder, we are working in ‘dog years’ to reinvent Michigan. Over the past several months, we have created entirely new funding programs to attract new business investment for job creation and promote redevelopment of our communities.

Our mission is to keep you informed. As we continue to build our contact list, please let your CATeam Specialist know if we need to add or delete someone to or from our mailing list. We also appreciate your feedback on how we can make this a more effective tool.

Sincerely,

The CATeam

Meet the new-and-improved CATeam

Several new members have joined the CATeam (new map.)  The most recent addition, Nate Scramlin, started Feb. 21 and has taken over most of Kent Kukuk’s old territory. Nate previously worked for the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission, where he spent six years as an Associate Planner.

Community Revitalization Program

The new CRProgram, signed into law in December by Governor Snyder, promotes community revitalization through grants and loans.  Projects with brownfield and historic properties are eligible for consideration.  A fact sheet and sample application, as well as the program guidelines are posted HERE. Contact your CATeam Specialist to learn more about the program.

Did you know?
Under the new CRProgram, brownfield redevelopment projects no longer need the property to be added to a Brownfield Plan (unless an ACT 381 Work Plan for tax increment financing is being pursued.) This will help streamline the process.

CDBG Update (for non-entitlement communities)

Limited funds are available for community development grants, including façade improvements, acquisition assistance and blight elimination. Public infrastructure improvement grants are available only for projects that create jobs. Most often, these projects are identified in traditional downtowns.  Contact your CAT Specialist to learn more.

Redevelopment Ready Communities

The Michigan Economic Development Corp., in collaboration with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, announced the launch of the statewide Redevelopment Ready Communities® (RRC) Program. RRC measures and then certifies communities that integrate transparency, predictability and efficiency into their development practices with the goal of realizing a community-supported redevelopment vision that is inviting to investors.  It‘s one of the first initiatives to measure a community’s progress toward “redevelopment readiness.”  Jennifer Rigterink is the RRC Program Manager leading efforts at MEDC.

Urban Farmers Market Program Request for Proposals (RFP)

The Urban Farmers Market Program provides funds to Michigan entitlement communities for existing urban farmers market projects. Proposals in these categories are encouraged:
  • Growing Farmers, and;
  • Growing Markets
Proposals that incorporate activities listed under the section “Types of Programs Allowed” will receive full consideration. To submit an RFP or for more information, please click HERE.
