As we embrace the slower pace, brilliant scenery and crisp breezes of fall in Pure Michigan, travelers have had a lot to choose from in addition to fall color touring.
Car enthusiasts seem to be happy with the time and format of the “new” North American International Auto Show in Detroit, art aficionados are converging on Grand Rapids for ArtPrize 2022 and hikers have been reminded of the fact that our state is home to more miles of trail than any other state during Michigan Trails Week.
I had the pleasure of visiting both Detroit and Grand Rapids for these grandstand events. I also had some time for a run on one of our trails but of all the things I did this past week, I felt most impacted by attending the heritage gathering of the Michigan Freedom Trail Commission. The commission preserves, protects and promotes the legacy of the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery movement in Michigan. One of our team members, Robin Peebles, is a commission member so I’ve been aware of the group’s work for years.
Today, as we try to understand each other’s perspectives about diversity, it helps to know more about the people, places and events from our past that helped to make us who we are today, as a community. What’s more, I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling a great level of pride knowing that our state played an important role to help fugitive slaves in their quest for freedom. The gathering made me even more aware of the challenges that freedom seekers faced as they came north and the ongoing issues that made life difficult after they arrived. To that end, September is also International Underground Railroad Month. Our history shapes our future, and the diversity of our people and our places is our strength. To know our history is to learn from it.
All the best, David Lorenz Vice President Travel Michigan (517) 243-3073
