The Vidlings & Tapeheads Film Festival is BACK for YEAR THREE, presenting unconventional stories in FILM + MUSIC + ART! The festival features Live Music Performances curated by Seraphine Collective, an Art Exhibition coordinated by Alana Lorin Carlson, and a diverse and engaging film program from a progressive group of filmmakers from Michigan and around the world!!

Vidlings & Tapeheads showcases films that tell stories in an unusual way, exploring eclectic subject matter and themes—making the familiar strange and the strange familiar. We encourage and celebrate subversiveness, innovative use of materials and budget, and quirky independent work that doesn’t quite fit into any one genre. We are committed to inclusivity and invite people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, creeds, orientations, and walks of life to participate.

RSVP NOW AND STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES ON OUR 2019 LINEUP!

VTFF is housed at Ant Hall and its adjoining Ghost Light bar in Hamtramck, Michigan. Throughout its over twenty-year history, Planet Ant has produced film festivals, improv festivals (including but not limited to Panic in Hamtramck Music Festival, BoxFest Detroit, Detroit Women of Comedy Festival, TromaDance Detroit) and hosted events by The 313 and other renowned local and national artists.

YArtsDet

Y Arts Detroit recently presented the first annual Detroit Can Film Festival (DCFF), which celebrates the ability to effectively tell a concise story. Any student ages 14-18 who lives or attends school in Detroit, Hamtramck or Highland Park were eligible to submit to the festival.

Student videos had to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be less than 10.9 seconds in length
  • Must address festival theme
  • Can be produced using any available technology that can be shared digitally (phone, tablet, digital camera, etc.)
  • Participating students must reside or attend school in Detroit, Hamtramck or Highland Park

Festival Date

DCFF 2019 took place at the Marlene Boll Theatre at the Boll Family YMCA on Saturday, June 1.

2019 Festival Theme

The festival theme for 2019 was The Water in My Life. Students were encouraged to use their videos to explore the role that water plays in their everyday lives. This is a great opportunity for young people to use their voices and share their points of view about an essential part of life.

Submissions were judged by a panel of area media creatives and finalists were shown at the first DCFF. Finalists are eligible for great prizes to recognize their excellence in visual storytelling and how well they address the festival theme.

Prizes

Final judging took place at the festival by a panel comprised of volunteers with backgrounds in media. The panel selected two winners, and the audience award was decided by popular vote.

  • Festival Grand Prize – $500
  • First Runner Up – $150
  • Audience Award – $150

Congrats to Elise Moore for her film MacArthur which won the festival grand prize. Also congrats to runner up film "Nourishment" by Jubeda Juby, Miriam Alrohani, and Kristian Baker. Audience Award went to "Upbringing" by Ifinan Quray and Laronda Hubbard. Well done students and all who submitted. You can watch all the finalists films at the link below.

Detroit Red Wings doc 'The Russian Five' skates new path to box-office win, by Julie Hinds, Detroit Free Press

Pair of interns join the MFDMO team for summer term

Hello, my name is Jessica Joppich. I am a student at Indiana University – Bloomington, studying Media Management, Industry and Policy as well as Business with a focus on Entrepreneurship. I found out about the internship with MFDMO through the suggestion of a professor who thought I would enjoy working at MEDC.

At IU I co-run the student television station and enjoy directing two sports shows that are produced through the station. I have always had a love for film and music, knowing from a young age that that is what I want to work with in the future. Once I graduate I hope to be working on the business side of the entertainment industry, with either film or music.

Hi, my name is Erik Kadar. I am currently a Senior at Michigan State University studying Media and Information with a focus of Film and Media Production. I found out about this internship through a few of my peers I film with who have interned at MEDC before. I am interested in MEDC because I would like to gain valuable insight and experience on the economic aspects and practices that go into the entertainment industry.  In addition to interning at MEDC, I am also a Production Assistant intern at WKAR TV. Film and television production is my passion. My goal in the near future is to work in the entertainment industry and work my way up to a management position.
