Michigan State University Transforms Campus into Mobility Ecosystem

Michigan State University is transforming its campus into a living mobility research and development lab. Spartan Mobility Village will focus on socio-mobility, specifically understanding the individual and societal effects of autonomous vehicles. The university’s blend of urban, suburban and rural roads are perfect for mimicking the real world, in a controlled infrastructure on the campus.

“MSU’s campus is unrivaled in scope, size and diverse mobility environments, providing an ideal testing ground and validation site. Studying mobility on football or basketball game days, for example, will provide great insights on solutions for safely and efficiently navigating through densely crowded areas,” said Leo Kempel, dean of MSU’s College of Engineering. “In addition to using campus as an ecosystem for research and development of technologies, we are looking to develop the future of human-centric, multi-modal mobility.”

Real-world applicable research is crucial to the development and testing of new technologies, urban planning, laws, insurance and more.

TARDEC Leader-Follower Demonstration at American Center for Mobility

In October, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and partners demonstrated advanced behaviors in an autonomous leader-follower convoy at the American Center for Mobility.

The convoy included two commercial line-haul trucks and two M915 tractor-trailers, which looped a two-mile course while demonstrating their autonomous vehicle technology. The demo was the beginning of a two-year study that will feature both military and commercial vehicles. The goal of this first-of-its-kind study is to autonomously control an entire fleet of vehicles while optimizing safety and efficiency.

Partners included MDOT, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Auburn University.

ACM’s versatile facilities allow multi-truck convoys to test at highway speeds in highway-like scenarios, including on-and-off ramps, under bridges and overpasses, through tunnels and into tunnels, to provide data for a variety of real-life tasks.
