Fresh Coast Film Festival, showing environmentalist/outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts films returns to Marquette October 18-21

No film festival out there embodies and embraces the outdoor lifestyle way of living quite the way the Fresh Coast Film Festival is able to accomplish. Perhaps that is because the festival founders, all Marquette residents, are so near and dear to what the outdoor lifestyle represents to themselves and their community.
With over 130 films screening at this years festival and several curated outdoor activities for patrons to attend, such as hikes, bike trips, yoga, and more, it's easy to see why Marquette is such a special place, and such a fitting home for the Fresh Coast Film Festival.
Another unique feature of the Fresh Coast Film Fest, is the partnership they've formed with Northern Michigan University. NMU students actually curate and lead the outdoor expedition experiences and do so for credit. This presents a wonderful learning experience for the students and brings them closer to the outdoor wonderland that exists everywhere around Greater Marquette.

Royal Starr Film Festival puts the focus on the filmmaker community in Southeast Michigan
The Royal Starr Film Festival is back next week for its
third year running. Held in the Emagine Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan, the
festival offers multiple events, including the Filmmaker Community Mixer (held
every month), International Film Festival and other expos and panels. It runs from
Thursday, October 11th to Sunday, October 14th. Royal
Starr has grown quickly in the three years since its conception, attracting
filmmakers from all over the globe while also showcasing the work of local
filmmakers right here in Michigan.
The success of the Royal Starr Film Festival depends on the
hard work of its leadership board. Festival treasurer Billy Whitehouse helps
organize the 115 filmmakers attending the festival, some coming all the way
from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Billy emphasized the educational
component of the Royal Starr Film Festival and the desire to introduce festival
patrons to professionals in the entertainment industry. “We’re going to have
panels and speakers do presentations for the audience on things like producing,
editing, screenwriting, casting and special effects,” Whitehouse says.
The Royal Starr Film Festival is also a place for filmmakers
and distributors to network and buy and sell their films. “We want to be the
portal that allows filmmakers to connect with distributors,” Whitehouse says. “Some
of our films here at the film festival have gotten national distribution
through our film market.”
By giving diverse groups of filmmakers the chance to showcase
their work, Whitehouse hopes to provide a space that caters to a wide-reaching
audience. “When we have 115 films, there’s something for everyone’s taste,” he
says. “We want to have as broad a reach as we can have.”

Mosaic Film Experience gives young students tools and applications to successfully create films and spurn interest in film industry
 The Mosaic Film Experience
uses the platform of digital media to provide students with an opportunity to
tell their unique stories and equip them with the critical thinking,
collaborative, and creative skills necessary for career preparedness. One way
we achieve this is through our annual Mosaic Film Experience Event, a full-day,
interactive experience that provides youth with access to industry
professionals through interactive workshops and career-inspiring guest
speakers.
Each year, The Mosaic Film Experience Event begins with keynote
presentations. Tentative Speakers for
2018 include:
o
Representatives from the STARZ series America to Me
o
Spoken word motivational speakers Kinetic Effect
o
Hollywood Costume Concept Artist Phillip Boutte
Jr.
o
HBO Vice President of POS Strategy and Education Carla Moore
Following the keynote portion, students participate in breakout
session workshops facilitated by local professionals. Topics range from game
design, shooting a music video, and virtual reality, to post-production,
podcasting, animation, and music production.
The event concludes with a film screening and award ceremony for
the 2018 Mosaic Mobile™ film contest, an annual mobile film competition for
high school and college students where films are shot, edited, and entered on
mobile devices. Mosaic Mobile challenges the conventions of storytelling. With
technology leveling the content creation playing field, our focus is on how
students can use today’s tools to tell original and engaging stories.
All 2018 Mosaic Mobile films must be two to three minutes in
length and must meet three requirements. Entrants must use “tell a story”
as a theme for their film, include some form of art as a prop, and the words
“it’s different now,” must be spoken or used in the film. Art used in the
film must be self-produced or shown with permission of the artist and
credited. Entries can be submitted via
the MFE website until
October 12 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
