So kids are already back to school and summer is in the rear view.  This year summer really seemed to happen in the blink of an eye.  There is plenty still going on in the coming weeks and months that we will fill you in on.  Let's get ready for pumpkin spiced everything and some amazing fall events.  Strap in, because Michigan's creative events are aplenty and hopefully you all are as exited as we are for what's headed down the pike.

For Michigan's 4th-8th grade educators, implementing a computer science education into the classroom has never been easier than with Google's CS First program

goog

In November of 2015 the Michigan Film & Digital Media Office partnered with Google to make computer science programs more accessible and approachable for 4th-8th grade students across Michigan.  From it's inception in 2015 through the 2017 summer camp activities, the MFDMO CS First program has been immensely popular.

The Google CS First program is a free software platform that has students engaging in computer programming across nine different themes (animation, art, fashion, friends, game design, music & sound, social media, sports and storytelling). Visit www.cs-first.com for additional details about the program.

The MFDMO invites all Michigan educators, schools, school districts and school programs to sign up for CS First through our online portal which can be accessed HERE.

We also must mention that new schools signing up for CS First through the MFDMO portal will be given 20 pairs of headphones for use in the classroom.  Also, every school that signs up will have the ability to reward students who complete themes in their CS First clubs with all new digital badges.  These badges allow the students to add their success in the CS First program to their other scholarly achievements.  For more info about either the headphones or the digital badge offer, click HERE.

Attend the 2nd Annual LivelyLands Festival in Empire, Michigan and become one with the art, music and community that surround you

ll

The 2018 version of LivelyLands gets underway tomorrow in beautiful Empire, Michigan in Leelanau County.  For those yet to visit this part of the state, you are truly missing out on some of the most stunning vistas Michigan has to offer.  Add in locally flavored art, music and culture and you got the recipe for a perfect weekend festival.  Let's hope the weather cooperates.  We chat with event founder Emily Lively to get her unique perspective on how this festival came to be and what's in store for this weekends festivities.

Q&A w/ LivelyLands Music Festival Founder, Emily Lively

ll2

Q:  Thank you for giving up your time to answer a few questions.  What is your role with Lively Lands and can you share a bit about your professional background?

A:  I'm the Executive Producer and a founding member of LivelyLands Production and LivelyLands Music Festival. I've worked in the music industry and festival circuit for over 15 years and have also toured as a singer songwriter. My festival background includes extensive involvement with the Kerrville Folk Festival, Gate Manager at Bonaroo, and am now a Housing Specialist for SXSW. My degree at Texas State University in Event Production and Promotion culminated in a fellowship with the Texas Music Office in the summer of 2013 and I was hired on at SXSW that fall. SXSW has offered me a leave of absence to pursue and develop LivelyLands in my hometown of Empire Michigan.

Q:  How did Lively Lands come together?  What is the mission or vision for this festival?

A:  After working and attending different festivals throughout the years I realized that I had a unique perspective on the festival scene and a unique set of skills to develop my own festival as well as a team of partners who share the same passion for music and commity. I've also developed a deep connection with the Austin music scene and grew up heavily involved in the Michigan music scene. That, with the desire to return to my Northern Michigan roots, was what inspired LivelyLands.

The mission of LivelyLands is to nurture, music, art and community with nature. The lifestyle on the Leelanua Peninsula is heavily impacted by our beautiful natural resources and we hope to combine this lifestyle with the artists who so inspire me. It is also my passion to offer an accessible festival that fosters community development by limiting attendance, offering special rates to vets, students, and seniors, and connecting and fostering artist relationships on a national scale.

Q:  What would your elevator pitch be for someone new to Lively Lands?

A:  LivelyLands is a boutique and family friendly destination festival with a diverse lineup, local food, sunsets, and 300 of your new best friends. We offer a laid back atmosphere that allows attendees to interact with artists and each other without the huge crowd under breathtaking the skies of the Sleeping Bear.

Q:  How much does the location in Empire and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore play into the overall aesthetic of the festival?

A:  It is everything. I grew up here and it is so important that we utilize this magnificent backdrop that is the Sleeping Bear National lakeshore and surrounding area. Empire has so much to offer in it's main street, beautiful public beach, and friendly local businesses. I couldn't ask for a better region to inspire this special festival.

Q:  Where can people go to learn more information about Lively Lands and also find ticketing information?  Are there different ticketing levels for the weekend festival?

A:  To learn more and buy tickets visit www.thelivelylands.com. Weekender and day passes are available. For a little extra experience attendees can purchase VIP tickets for the weekend, Friday, and Saturday. Single day passes start at just $20-$75. Weekender passes are $75 and VIP Weekender passes are $150. Our schedule outlines all events and credentials needed to attend. We are also offering tickets for the same price at the door of all events.

Q:  Any parting thoughts as Lively Lands is now right around the corner?

A:  I have an exceptional team of industry professionals from all over the country showing up daily and I couldn't be prouder to create this special weekend and share it with my friends, family, and community.

I See You Awards hits the Emagine Royal Oak for a weekend full of events honoring independent filmmakers

icu

The 2018 I See You Awards got underway on Thursday with screenings that continue through that evening.  These awards are a celebration of the talented independent filmmakers in Michigan, and this year will include a workshop that will guide filmmakers in using SAG-AFTRA talent in their various projects.  Finally, the weekend will culminate in a 'Black Tie' awards ceremony to recognize and award Michigan's deserving filmmakers.  If you have plans to attend, all of the festivities will be taking place at the lovely Emagine Royal Oak cinemas.  Show your support for independent cinema in Michigan.  Next we'll chat with event founder and filmmaker herself, Terri Lee.

Q&A w/ I See You Awards founder, Terri Lee

icu2

Q:  Thank you for giving up your time to answer a few questions.  What is your role with the I See You Awards and can you share a bit about your professional background?

A.  I am the founder of the I See You Awards.  The idea for the awards came to me through my role as a film critic for WWJ Newsradio 950.  I hold memberships in a number of professional trade organizations, including the prestigious Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), the largest film critics group in the United States and Canada; the Detroit Film Critics Society; the African-American Film Critics Association; and SAG-AFTRA.

After years of reviewing movies, I noticed that there wasn’t an awards program specifically for low-budget independent filmmakers, so I decided to create one.  For example, only a small percentage of filmmakers will ever be nominated for – let alone win – an Academy Award®, SAG-AFTRA Award ®, Golden Globe®, or even a Film Independent Spirit Award®.  The “I See You Awards®” create a platform where the independent film community is recognized, and they provide opportunities for these filmmakers to grow and excel in their careers.

The “I See You Awards®,” which presented its first annual awards program in 2017 to rave reviews, provides an opportunity for these filmmakers to earn much-deserved public recognition for their accomplishments.

I am also an independent filmmaker myself, so I know how much hard work, determination and personal sacrifice goes into making a movie.  In fact, I recently applied for and was accepted into the Sundance Institute's Screenwriting Intensive program that gets underway in October.

In July, I spent 10 days in Los Angeles, where I shot a short film and worked with some seasoned Hollywood professionals.  My goal was to see, firsthand, how movies are made in Hollywood and bring that knowledge back to Detroit to share with other indie filmmakers.  I will do that during a panel discussion on Friday, August 24, at the Emagine Theater in Royal Oak.  The 2-hour industry seminar, which is part of I See You Awards events, will also feature award-winning indie filmmaker Phil Elam, and Kathy Byrne, Director of TV/Theatrical for SAG-AFTRA Chicago.

Q:  Michigan is certainly blessed with some amazingly talented independent filmmakers.  How did you identify the need to recognize that talent?

This goes back to my role as a professional film critic.  Over the more than 10 years that I have been reviewing movies, I have been approached by countless independent filmmakers asking me to review their movies.  So, even though I can't review them all, as you can imagine, I've seen a lot of movies!  I've also worked as a crew member on several low budget projects.

But because most of these indie filmmakers have very low budgets - or no budget at all to speak of - some of their movies were not being seen by the general public.  I saw the quality work that these filmmakers were doing, so I decided to develop an outlet where their projects could be seen by the public and also recognized and rewarded.

Q:  How would you explain what the I See You Awards are all about to the layperson with little knowledge of the event?

Simply put, the "I See You Awards®" are a celebration of low-budget independent filmmakers!  As mentioned previously,  the awards provide an opportunity for the low-budget independent film community to earn much-deserved public recognition for their accomplishments.   They also give people who love movies an opportunity to see movies that they otherwise may not have an opportunity to see.

Q:  You’ve found a home for the awards at the Emagine Royal Oak cinema.  Can you talk about the partnership and what Emagine is doing to support Michigan’s up and coming filmmakers?

The folks at Emagine Entertainment love movies!  I was introduced to Emagine's Paul Glantz several years ago, and I quickly discovered how fond he is of the local film community.  And just about everyone in the indie film community knows what a big supporter he, and everyone at Emagine, is of indie film.  Emagine joined the “I See You Awards as a partner/sponsor in our very first year and they were thrilled to return for our 2nd annual event.

The people at Emagine are such a pleasure to work with!  No matter the size of the event, they give everyone first-class service.  I am so proud and happy that the awards will be at the Emagine Royal Oak this year.

Q:  Where can people go to learn more information about the I See You Awards and also find ticketing information?

People who want to learn more about the I See You Awards can visit our website at www.iseeyouawards.com.  We're also very active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  Ticket information is available on our website.

Q:  Any parting thoughts as the I See You Awards  is now right around the corner?

Yes, I want to invite everyone to attend the I See You Awards this year!  Not only will they have an opportunity to see some of the excellent work being done by independent filmmakers today, by attending the screenings on Thursday, August 23, they'll have an opportunity to vote on which films they'd like to see win our coveted People's Choice Awards (in both the short and feature film categories).  We have a full day of movies starting at 11:00 a.m., with the last movie starting at 7:30 p.m.

If an indie filmmaker wants to learn more about filmmaking and about using SAG-AFTRA talent, they'll want to be sure to attend our industry seminar on Friday, August 24.  It gets underway at 12:00 noon and runs until 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday, we hold our signature event: our Black Tie awards ceremony!  The awards get underway at 2:00 p.m. with an opportunity for our filmmakers and guests to walk the blue carpet and network with other attendees.  The awards presentation will begin at 3:00 p.m., and just like the awards ceremonies that you see on TV,  when the filmmakers win, there's a whole lot of celebrating going on!  It's a lot of fun and an event not to be missed!

All of our events take place at the Emagine Royal Oak.

Ticketing information is available on our website (www.iseeyouawards.com).  We hope to see everyone there!
