Nonprofit employers expect to grow their staff in 2017.
Click the video below to hear from Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), President & CEO, Donna Murray-Brown and find your fulfilling career on MNA’s Job Center.
The MNA is an equal opportunity employer
Skype interviewing is becoming more and more popular for
employers – it’s easy to see why this is becoming the preferred method of choosing
the best candidate for job postings. Technology has become an important factor in
corporate America and as a job seeker you want to be prepared for the modern
way. According to the Huffington
Post, in 2012, 42% of employers used Skype to recruit candidates which is a
10% increase from the previous year. At a rapid pace, Skype is becoming a tool
for employers to use technology in their recruiting process. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation's (MEDC) Talent Team has
some advice to help job seekers who may or may not have used Skype to interview
before.
1. Dress as
if you’re in an in-person interview-It’s a misconception that you only have
to wear a dress shirt because people believe that employers only look at the
top half of you. This may be true for some employers but you should want to be
safe. Better safe than sorry.
2. Keep eye
contact-A common mistake in skype interviewing is looking at the screen
instead of at the camera. It may be weird to look into a small camera hole but it’s
distracting for an employer to constantly look at you talk without eye contact.
3. Choose
appropriate setting-Sometimes it’s difficult to find a perfect place to
interview with Skype. Brian Schrems, MEDC Human Resources Director says, “You
want to make sure that it’s in an area without distractions – e.g., the person
being interviewed should be the only person in view. What’s behind you
matters. You want a clean, neutral background with good lighting.
You want a simple chair/table/desk that is free of excess personal items and
paper. The candidate should avoid basements or sitting in front of a
window. Public spaces should be avoided unless internet is not available
at home. If the candidate needs to find a public space for internet access
(say, a coffee shop), it’s always a good rule of thumb to let the
organization/interviewer know by acknowledging that they might be in a
busier-than-usual area. Libraries can also provide the candidate with an
alternative quiet space that can be reserved to have an interview conducted.”
4. Turn your
phone off-You would think that this is an obvious piece of advice but
during skype interviews, it’s easy to forget things like this in a
non-traditional interview.
5. Have
resume and sticky notes nearby-Take advantage of not being in-person with
the employer. You can use your resume as a cheat sheet to help you recall your
accomplishments.
Where can I get help?
