Seth berry,
born and raised in Quincy, MI, attended Michigan State University where he
studied engineering His love for people
led him to switch his concentration to Human Resources and start his HR
foundation in the manufacturing industry.
Later in his
career, Berry worked as a HR associate in the trucking industry where he got
laid off in the beginning of the economy’s downturn. After a frustrating job
search and two lay-offs, he and his family, including his wife Amber and two
kids, took a Spring break trip to Nashville. While in Tennessee, Seth was impressed
by the city’s infrastructure and thriving economy so he decided to uproot his family
to Tennessee. He worked as a Human Resource consultant for a Professional
Employer Organization (PEO) which is a firm that provides services such as
recruiting, risk and safety management, training, etc. to organizations. Throughout his time at this company, he
quickly got promoted to Director of HR.
“HR has to
know how the things we do affect people up and down stream in a company and I
had to interact with several companies on a daily basis.” said Seth. “I had
about 75 companies on my docket where I was responsible for their networking
database and creating policies.”
Even though
Berry was at the peak in his career, his heart still longed for family, friends
and those Michigan lakes. “I missed the
Michigan summers. I grew up around lakes and hanging out at Marble Lake in
Quincy was highlight of my summers.” said Berry. “It was tough seeing all
the Pure Michigan ads reminding me to come back home.”
After the
PEO was sold, Seth continued to progress in his career when he joined the
industry of Outsource calling where he was the Regional HR manager for an
international company. On one particular day, family came into town and
encouraged him to apply for a job with Clemens Food Group in Coldwater, MI.
With a little encouragement from his wife Amber, Seth went ahead and applied.
“When I
interviewed, I fell in love with them and everything they stood for.” said Seth
“I called my wife from the Pennsylvania airport and told her ‘I really want
this job’. I had never seen a company like it before.”
It was a
dream come true for Seth and his family when he received the offer to join the
Clemens Food Group as the Director of Human Resources for the new Michigan
plant. “My number one responsibility is adhering to core values and staying
consistent with the culture, vision of the family and the team members.” Berry
and his team are focusing on building and growing the team members there. Phase
one of his mission will be to staff the plant with the best and the brightest.
Phase two of this project will be to support and engage with team members.
“Ultimately, HR is the resource for humans and I want to focus on being a
supportive team.”
For Seth
Berry, once a Michigander, always a Michigander. In his final comments of his
interview and in just a few words, he expressed his yearning.
“I’m just glad to be back home.”
