In response to the increasing demand for information technology (IT) jobs, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is partnering with “IT in the D” and Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan to provide funding for training and certification for entry level IT positions in Flint, including help-desk services, typically gateway employment for career advancement in the field.
“This is an opportunity for job candidates to get in at the ground level of an exciting profession that is expanding with the promise of a rewarding career,” said Cynthia Richardson, director, talent attraction and resources, Michigan Economic Development Corporation…
“By providing minimal or no-cost training, the field is immediately accessible to job seekers while promoting Flint as an attractive market for new IT jobs,” she said. “Serving as a catalyst for IT education and increasing the supply of qualified IT job-seekers clearly demonstrates the state’s commitment to foster a positive business and job-creation environment in Mid-Michigan.”
Through its partnership with MEDC and Goodwill Industries, “IT in the D” is expanding to Flint with the aim of eventually a statewide presence. Local partners include GST Michigan Works! And Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce.
“IT in the D,” a nonprofit established in 2001 as a networking group for IT professionals in Detroit, aims to provide a roadmap for training, certifications, job searches and career counseling. The Detroit chapter has 5,000 members.
IT-training funds, which come from a Goodwill Industries grant, cover costs for online courses through Career Academy and all or partial accreditation fee for 15 candidates. In today’s job market, a degree and good grades won’t
suffice. Soft skills are essential to all careers and employers are in constant
need of these. Soft skills are personal attributes that enable someone to plug
right into a company and harmoniously interact with other people. Recruiters
are looking to hire and retain talent. But the issue that they face is keeping
skilled workers because they lack the basic soft skills needed to be a valuable
employee. As a job seeker, you want to make sure that you are prepared to be
successful beyond the hiring date.
Pure Michigan Talent Connect offers a free soft skill
training program as a resource to help you. The goals of this Lifelong Soft Skills eLearning series is to raise awareness among students,
job seekers, and incumbent workers about key skills needed for workplace
success. It encourages and suggests attributes that employers are looking for,
and is not intended to address employer practices or labor management
relations.
The program offers 14 video training options in four areas,
including:
· Communication
· Critical Thinking
· Collaboration
· Creativity
“Your previous work experience or technical skills may land
you the interview.” said Director of Talent Attraction and Resources, Cynthia
Richardson. “But if you lack the soft skills employers need, it could be the
deal-breaker between getting the job or not. Being able to provide the
interviewer or hiring manager examples of your previous work or school projects
that demonstrate teamwork, communication, and time management are just a few of
the key soft skills employers look for.”
The eLearning Soft Skills Program
provide extensive training on things that are learned outside of the classroom.
If you’re looking for a way to stand out from other candidates and you would

On April 13, 2017, Ann Arbor SPARK
conducted an exclusive career networking event at Michigan Technological
University in Houghton. It was marketed
as an informal career networking event in an effort to replace the typical
career fair approach with a more personalized, relaxed environment where
students are comfortable having detailed conversations with participating
employers which included GM, Nexient, Rhetech, Zeiss and Southwest Research
Institute.
The networking event was planned
around MTU’s annual Design Expo in an effort to target Engineering and IT
students for the high demand in the Ann Arbor area. The Design Expo highlights hands-on,
discovery based learning at Michigan Tech.
More than 1000 students in Enterprise and
Senior Design teams showcased their work and competed for awards. A panel
of judges, made up of distinguished corporate representatives and Michigan
Tech staff and faculty members, critiqued the projects. Many team projects
are sponsored by industry, which allows students to gain valuable
experience through competition at Design Expo, as well as direct exposure
to real industrial problems.
How were students selected for the
networking event?
Some participating employers were
judges and invited students that appeared to be of interest. Several projects were highlighted in
different breakout sessions where students presented on their project. Engineering and IT presenters were approached
and invited to the event, including all members of their team.
During the Design Expo event,
students would present their project to visitors of their display and answer
questions. Ann Arbor employers provided students they were interested in a
special invitation to the networking event encouraging them to attend.
The networking event
The networking event was held at
the Downtowner Lounge, a popular location for MTU students. Fortunately it was an unusually pleasant day
so many of the participants networked on the deck outdoors. Approximately 75 students attended and the employer
feedback was immediately positive. The casual environment allowed students to
learn more about the attending employers and about their job opportunities.
Employers had the opportunity to learn more about the students they selected to
attend, something that does not happen naturally at a career fair structured
event.
