Whether the internship is paid or unpaid, learning is priceless.
I’ve interned for multiple companies that had great programs that kept me busy working
on meaningful work, and learning through hands-on experience. Good internship
programs made me feel like I was actually in my field and made me feel like I
was a part of the company. On the other hand, I’ve experienced un-productive internships
where I just felt like a number and someone who was taking up space. Some
companies design their program to help students get experience and others hire
students to help with administration duties. But companies aren’t always to
blame for your bad experience. Although some companies made it easier for me to
learn the skill, I learned that in programs that weren’t as structured, it was
up to me to make the most out of my time.
1.
Help out
with other departments: If cross-departmental work is an option, try exploring
other roles in the company. Internships are all about learning and what better
way to learn than to step outside the box. If cross-departmental work is an
option
2.
Ask your
manager for more work-Sometimes managers might think that you can or even
want to help out with more responsibility. Asking your manager not only shows
initiative but it also shows them that you value your experience and time with
the company.
3.
Create
your own projects- Creating your own research and work project allows you
to develop problem-solving skills and shows both current and future employers
that you can contribute new ideas to their company.
Learning doesn’t always come in the form of what it says in the
job description. In my experiences, I realized that you have to make your own
to-do list and speak up for yourself, not only to show that you value your time
but for the sake of the program’s future. Some organizations aren’t aware of
how the program is working until you let them know. That sets you apart from
other interns because it shows that you care about learning and the company.
