October Newsletter
Hello Friends,
Please forgive the delay in getting our newsletter out this month. We've been busy the past several weeks supporting a few external events while also closing the books and reporting on our fourth quarter of fiscal year 2016.
What a whirlwind this last month has proven to be. It all began with ArtPrize, then the Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival, then MFOAC, then Detroit Design Festival, then the Ypsi24 Hour Film Shootout, then the Royal Starr Film Festival, and then Digital Summit Detroit, and finally commencing with the Fresh Coast Film Festival. If you are thinking of launching a creative industry event for next year, you may want to consider any time outside of late-September through mid-October.
Looking ahead, there are a few great events to look forward to, perhaps none more than Meaningful Play 2016. We will get you primed for that and recap the many other events occurring in the past month.
 An oldie, but a goodie
ArtPrize 8 Recap
ArtPrize was held over three weeks, from September 21st - October 9th. For the second consecutive year, ArtPrize has recognized film as an art form with entries being judged in the "Time-Based" portion of the competition.
ArtPrize On Screen, presented 10 entries this year in narrative, documentary, or short film formats. We were proud to once again sponsor ArtPrize and are thrilled that filmmakers are receiving recognition for their craft.
Among the entries were four Michigan-made shorts; 'Beloved', 'Croissant Man', 'Free Pie' and 'Monster, Me'. Also, among the entries were two Michigan-made feature films; 'Camp Manna' and 'The Alchemist Cookbook'.
We'd like to offer our congratulations to all of the winning artists and thank the event organizers and especially the many volunteers who all help make ArtPrize possible. Another year, another great event. Please read a few articles below:

Detroit Design Festival
When the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization made an unprecedented move last year by designating the City of Detroit as an official UNESCO City of Design (the only U.S. city to receive such a designation), organizers of the sixth-annual Detroit Design Festival (DDF) knew they had their work cut out to bolster the event.
DDF returned Sept. 21-25 with its annual citywide celebration of creativity. The event brought together designers and enthusiasts alike to celebrate Detroit’s role as a design capital. In celebration of Detroit’s new designation as a UNESCO City of Design, DDF events and programs will be exploring the ways in which design is shaping Detroit’s future. Signature events returning included: Eastern Market After Dark, Light Up Livernois, Youth Day, and an all-new Design Summit, and dozens of independent design happenings. For more information on DDF visit www.detroitdesignfestival.com and read a few of the articles below:

MFDMO Launches New Website
On September 29th
of this quarter, the MFDMO launched a new website (www.michiganbusiness.org/mifilmanddigital) which folded our office under the umbrella of
our parent organization, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The new site provides a very clean,
user-friendly layout, while maintaining our essential services from our
previous website. New features include a
portal for users to access creative industry jobs that are posted through www.MiTalent.org and a mechanism which allows our office to
capture data on Michigan-made productions and new media projects.
We will work to continuously improve upon our new website, keep it regularly
updated, and to share relevant information which impacts the creative
industries here in Michigan.
Game Development/Design Specific Job Categories Added to MFDMO Production Directory - SIGN UP TODAY
For those with a background in production, chances are likely that you have utilized and/or are registered in our production directory. Now that the Michigan Film & Digital Media Office has expanded our scope to include more of the creative industries, it makes sense to also expand our production directory to now include a variety of categories specific to game development.
These game development/design listings will help the MFDMO document the breadth of talent in the State of Michigan both to entrepreneurs looking to invest here and to our indigenous companies seeking to find quality employees for their teams.
It is free to create a listing and we only ask that for each listing created, you have one verifiable professional credit. The main categories in the game development guide include, but are not limited to Digital Art, Programming, Languages, Gaming, Game Design, Game Writing, Modeling/Simulation, and Gaming Production.

YPSI24 Hour Shootout, Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival and Fresh Coast Film Festival Recaps
The YPSI24 Hour Film Shootout competition took place over a 24 hour period on October 8th and 9th in which independent filmmakers had to assemble a crew and shoot their film.
While the filmmakers are competing for cash and prizes, they also are able to hold their work up against their peers and enjoy the process of completing a project under a very tight deadline.
On October 14th, all the participants and organizers gathered to screen their works and award the winning films.

The Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival is the perfect blend of independent film and live indie music. This year's HHMFM festival took place September 22-25 in Bay City and by all accounts it was another successful year.
HHMFM sets itself apart from other festivals by making live indie music a large component, but also does a great job of community involvement and organization through their half mile run and by incorporating a crowdfunding rally for the competing filmmakers.
Congratulations to all the HHMFM festival participants and winners.
