Going from intern to full-time employee with Brose North America Inc. was exciting enough for Amanda Heydel. But as the only materials engineer for the German auto supplier’s operations in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Heydel learned that she would be calling some shots all on her own. “Beyond just getting to go to Germany quite often, I also established the first testing lab here,” she said. “I basically went from being a student to having the faith of an international company to carve out my own workspace and get the tools that I would need to not only do my job, but do it well.”
Working in the auto industry wasn’t something Heydel had initially thought about while she was earning her degree in materials science. Growing up in the Detroit suburb of Shelby Township, she said it was certainly always a possibility, but not something she seriously thought about. It wasn’t until Brose – the world’s fifth largest family-owned automotive supplier, providing mechatronic systems for doors and seats, as well as electric motors and drives – approached her about being an intern that she discovered just how compelling it is.“When I interned for Brose, it just clicked,” she said. “When I witnessed just how absolutely amazing the process is I fell in love with it. “Plus, I work in seating, which is intriguing because it’s a part of the vehicle that everyone has instant contact with and experiences on a daily basis.”
And if being able to set up her own lab wasn’t cool enough, Heydel said she gets to work with multiple materials and embark on international travel. The company serves more than 80 manufacturers and 40 suppliers with 24,000 employees in 60 locations across the globe. For Heydel, who has a passion for German culture and graduated with a second bachelor’s degree in German studies, it seems almost too good to be true. “One of my goals while in college was to work at a German engineering company so that I could keep my love for the German language and culture alive with the hope of being able to travel back to Germany once in a while,” she said. “So far, I have gotten all of that at Brose. “But no matter how much I travel, Michigan will always be home.”
Beyond being close to family, Michigan is special for its changing seasons and the abundance of outdoor activities you can do, Heydel explained. When she isn’t working with metals from the stages of predevelopment, development testing, advising and failure analysis, Heydel is biking trails in Southeast Michigan with her fiancé or going to the dog park with her beagle, Naboo.“Michigan is also an affordable place to live so you don’t have to work an unreasonable amount to enjoy life,” she said. “I’m able to live comfortably and do everything that I love.“Plus, there is a great culture here with the different kinds of foods, bars and communities in the suburbs and downtown Detroit.”
