Industry Market Potential Indices
Interested in exporting, but not sure which market to start?
Trying to decide which new country to target next? Michigan State University’s
International Business Center has developed a series of Market Potential Indices
(MPIs) to be utilized as the first step of market research. MPI is a very
useful tool for companies in the industry who are in the process of researching
new markets for export. MPI is designed to support other detailed market
research and shouldn’t able used as the single source of the decision. However,
this data-driven tool can help guide conversations on market selection based
upon a variety of measurable factors.
How It Works
The Industry Specific Market Potential Index (MPI) aims to
compare 89 countries, which globally have the highest Gross Domestic Product
(GDP), with each other on several dimensions in order to rank them according to
their market potential for different industries. The focus of the study is to
identify new markets to export goods rather than identifying new countries to
invest in.
The Index compares these countries on six dimensions; size,
growth rate, capacity, openness of the market, existing logistics
infrastructure and risk (political, economic and business) of the country. To
measure each dimension a different set of indicators are identified for every
industry. Secondary data is used for these indicators which have been gathered
from different reputable sources, as noted. Ranking scores are calculated by
adding up the dimensions, weighted by relative importance.

Germany- the world’s leading tradeshow destination
Germany is the world's no. 1 location for hosting
international trade fairs. It stands out against the international competition
in terms of its facilities, its level of innovation and its broad reach. Around
150 international trade fairs and exhibitions are held in Germany every year,
attracting up to 170,000 exhibitors and between nine and ten million visitors.
The outstanding feature of German trade fairs is their international character:
more than half of the exhibitors come from other countries, and a third of
those are from countries outside Europe. Three of the five largest exhibition
centers in the world are in Germany, and four of the ten highest performing
trade fair organizers in the world are based there. For German companies, trade
fairs are among the most important tools for business-to-business
communication.
