Making films in Michigan focus of Traverse City Film Festival panel discussion

Michigan Film & Digital Media Office sponsors ‘how-to create productions’ forum at TCFF film school

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A diverse panel of industry experts will explore the process of filmmaking in Michigan, from idea to attracting financing to finished production, as one of the course offerings at the Traverse City Film Festival Film School, part of the annual Traverse City Film Festival, which runs July 26-31 in the northwestern Michigan community along the shores of Grand Traverse Bay.

“Create Your Film in Michigan/Making Movies in Michigan” will begin 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 27 at Northwestern Michigan College, 1701 E. Front Street, Traverse City. The format includes a discussion on a range of issues in pre-production, production, post-production and distribution of a film. A question-and-answer segment will follow the formal 80-minute presentation. Cost: $5 per class at film school.

“We’re providing a dynamic and abridged presentation of how to turn an idea into a finished film drawing on advice and lessons of some of Michigan’s preeminent filmmakers and experts,” said Jenell Leonard, commissioner of Michigan Film & Digital Media Office, which is sponsoring the panel discussion.

“Our aim is to provide a detailed, step-by-step approach to filmmaking, and highlight Michigan’s phenomenal resources, including the filmmaking community, access to a diverse range of locations, and public support, from state to local offices,” said Leonard.

Panelist include:

Rich Brauer – Independent filmmaker who has worked on award-winning commercial and educational projects for the History Channel, Twentieth Century Fox, Animal Planet, National Park Service, among others.

Harold Cronk – Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer, whose short film, “War Prayer,” earned him Best Director award at the 2006 Beverly Hills International Film Festival. A sequel was released in April to his acclaimed film, “God’s Not Dead.”

Rola Nashef – Writer, director, producer, multi-media artist and lecturer. Named among “25 new Faces of Independent Cinema in 2011 by Filmmaker Magazine. She is a frequent guest on NPR, and a recipient of the Kresge Arts in Detroit Award.

Sultan Sharrief – Independent filmmaker, lecturer with a knack for social entrepreneurship. Curated a shorts program at Cinetopia International Film Festival. Currently working on “Street Cred,” a reality show that challenges Detroit high school students to compete for a film internship.

Joe Voss – Senior Counsel at Clark Hill’s Entertainment Industry Team. Represents financing and producing parties for film, television and on-line media productions.

Michael Angelo Zervos – Produced six feature and short films. Based in Detroit, where he manages Mother and Midwife Pictures, a narrative-driven production company.
