Five Tips for Maximizing Your MiTalent.org Job Seeker Account

Richard

Pure Michigan Talent Connect (PMTC), also known as MiTalent.org is the state of Michigan’s online job board website and is the official way for businesses and job seekers to connect in Michigan. It is a free resource for job seekers and employers and offers some unique features that other job board websites do not offer, such as:

  • Connections to career events, programs, newsletters and career services
  • A resume creation tool for job-seekers who do not have a resume
  • Storage space for up to 30 employment related documents - things like cover letters, reference letters, college transcripts, DD214’s, and letters of recommendation, to name a few
  • Job seekers can elect to have new job openings that match their search criteria emailed to them on a daily or weekly basis

Now, let’s take a look at the five tips that will maximize the effectiveness of your job seeker account – here they are in no specific order:

  1. When setting up or updating your job seeker account, you will want to build an extensive profile of “YOU” by creating an image that is going to match and attract your skills, abilities, and career interests to employers who are searching for your skillset
  2. Make sure to include as many skills in all 5 skill boxes as possible – use keywords in this section, not sentences, and separate with commas, i.e., customer service, data entry, manager, etc.
  3. Include as many Career Categories as possible – this is very important if you want employers to find you when they search for candidates
  4. Make sure your location preferences are accurate – employers can search for you based on your location and where you would be willing to relocate, so make sure your location preferences are as accurate as possible
  5. To improve your chances of being returned in employer-candidate searches, log-in regularly - at least once per week – this will drastically increase your chances of showing up in these searches

Doing these five things will maximize your job seeking efforts, hopefully leading to better results. You should also reach out to your local Michigan Works! office because they can provide face-to-face resume & cover letter assistance, job application assistance, and other employment related services, to include possible training funds for in-demand occupations.
