How to Ace Your Next Behavioral Job Interview in Four Steps!

Richard Martin

Interviewing for a job can be a very nerve-racking experience. I’ve always equated a job interview to two things: public speaking, and dating. You know what I’m talking about…that feeling you get in your stomach before you get up in front of a room full of people to deliver a speech or when you’re out on a first date and the expectations are high. Interviewing is a skill that doesn’t come naturally for anyone. Matter of fact, this skill has to be learned, then honed. I believe anyone can be a good interviewee by learning how to answer questions using the STAR Method.

STAR is an acronym that stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This method of answering interview questions can be quite helpful when you are in a behavioral interview and the interviewer(s) are trying to learn if you are going to be a good fit for the position. Matter of fact, most Executive Recruiters agree that there are only three true job interview questions, can you do the job, will you love the job, and are you a good fit for the culture of the organization? It’s these three things that interviewers are trying to uncover, regardless of how many questions they ask you.

With that in mind, an interviewer will most likely ask you something to the tune of, “please tell me a time when you worked in a team environment and how that benefited you”, or “give me an example of a time when you lead a team, and what was the result of that outcome”.

As soon as you hear these key words: “Give me an example of”, or “tell me a time when” your mind should automatically go to STAR. Prior to your interview, you will want to write down some key accomplishments from your previous jobs, from volunteer experience, school accomplishments, or any relevant event that makes for a great story. With that in mind, here’s how you would answer a behavioral interview question:

Situation:  Well, sir or mam the situation at hand was…

Task: The task involved was…

Action: The action that my team and I took was…

Result: And the result was… (Make sure it’s a positive result).

Using the STAR Method will help you frame your thoughts in a logical manner so that you can clearly explain to the interviewer what you accomplished and what you experienced or succeeded in doing. Remember, the way in which you deliver information is as equally important as the information itself, because it’s not always what you say, but how you say it.
