Film and Creative Industry Partners,

Today Governor Snyder signed House Bill 4122 which has ended the Michigan Film and Digital Media Incentive Program.

The Michigan Film Office has undergone several transitions since its creation back in 1979. With each new chapter, the mission of the film office has always remained strong. Even though the film incentives are no longer available, the Michigan Film Office will remain intact. We remain committed to the growth of a unique industry that provides a positive impact and diversity to our state.

As we write the next chapter, there is a significant need for the creative industry to help us take ownership of the future. That means collaborating and speaking as one voice as we promote Michigan as a place where the filmmaking and digital-media industries are thriving.

The Michigan Film Office will continue to support and grow the film and creative industries by accomplishing the recommendations outlined in the Michigan Film Office Strategic Plan highlighting three over-arching goals:

  1. Fostering a positive perception of Michigan as a place with a legacy of innovation and creativity that appreciates and cultivates the arts and culture
  2. Strengthening  regional partnerships with private sector, cultural institutions, arts groups and philanthropic communities
  3. Building collaborations with the education community, including high schools, colleges and arts-related programs to retain Michigan’s talent

Additionally, the Michigan Film Office will continue to provide non-incented related services, including:

  • Guidance on state and local permitting
  • 1-2 days of complimentary location scouting
  • Locations Directory database to search locations
  • Production Directory database to search for crew and vendor services
  • Customized cast and crew calls on the MFO website
  • Social media promotions on MFO Facebook and Twitter

We encourage you to take advantage of these services and continue to keep us posted on the development of your project as it will help us track the scope of creative work happening in the state.

While innovation and sustainability are vital to economic development in Michigan’s core industries, continual growth isn’t possible without creativity and a sense of ownership in the state’s future. The presence of the Michigan Film Office is a means to raise the international profile of the state’s commitment to enhancing Michigan’s image as a place of innovation and welcoming to creative professionals of all types.

We look forward to continuing to work with you.

Sincerely,

Jenell Leonard
