Fast Facts: - MDOT constructed a modern roundabout at the M-37/M-115 east junction near Mesick to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection. - Construction on the roundabout started in mid-August and was originally scheduled for completion by the end of September. - The work required a detour around the intersection from Sept. 4 until completion.
September 26, 2013 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced this morning that the new roundabout at the M-37/M-115 east junction near Mesick is now open to traffic. "Motorists, residents and business owners have been very understanding through this project and detour, and we appreciate that," said Rick Liptak, manager of MDOT's Cadillac Transportation Service Center (TSC). "Team Elmer's construction, the contractor on the project, did a great job building the roundabout and finishing the project ahead of schedule." The one-lane roundabout is the first of its kind built on a northern Lower Peninsula state highway. Modern roundabouts have been shown to improve safety and traffic flow at intersections, reducing both the frequency and severity of crashes. Construction on the roundabout began Aug. 12, with early work completed with lane closures and flag control. Beginning Sept. 4, traffic was detoured on 19, 16 and 11 3/4 roads, until the project was completed.
