US-12 resurfacing starts Tuesday, April 15, in Berrien County

COLOMA, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in partnership with Kalin Construction Co. Inc. is continuing a $9.1 million investment on almost 7 miles of US-12 from the Galien/Bertrand township line to Mayflower Road.

Tree clearing began in November; the contractor will be making the transition to roadwork next week. The project includes asphalt repaving and shoulder widening, intersection rebuilding, drainage improvements, guardrail replacement and pavement markings.

County:

Berrien

Highway:

US-12

Closest communities:

Niles, Buchanan and Galien

Start date:

Tuesday, April 15, 2025

Estimated end date:

Monday, Sept. 15, 2025

Traffic restrictions:

There will be lane closures throughout the project, with detours posted on Galine-Buchanan Road during total closures for culvert replacement.

Jobs numbers:

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 110 jobs.

Safety benefit:

Tree clearing helps maintain safe roadsides by reducing fixed-object crashes. The resurfacing will extend the service life of the road, improving the ride quality and safety for motorists.
