Reminder: M-59 pedestrian safety improvements

public meeting set for Nov. 2 in Pontiac

 

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is hosting a public meeting on the planned pedestrian safety improvements scheduled for 2025 in the city of Pontiac. MDOT officials will provide project details, current scheduling information and the proposed pedestrian detour routes. The public is invited to stop by anytime during the meeting to learn more about the project and provide comments.

Attendees who require mobility, visual, hearing, written or other assistance for effective participation should contact Orlando Curry at 517-241-7462 or CurryO@Michigan.gov, preferably at least five business days prior to the scheduled meeting. Forms are located on the Title VI webpage. Requests made after this timeframe will be evaluated and honored to the extent possible.

Project information:

  • In 2025, MDOT plans to build midblock pedestrian crossings and pedestrian refuge islands on M-59 between US-24 (Telegraph Road) and M-1 (Woodward Avenue Loop). The work will include the repurposing of the westbound right lane into a pedestrian refuge area and right-turn only lane.
  • To accommodate these pedestrian safety improvements, MDOT will acquire small amounts of land from a property in the Seminole Hills Historic District and a property adjacent to the Franklin Boulevard Historic District; the former is listed in and the latter is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
