Project information:
MDOT plans to invest about $2.9 million to remove and replace the M-26 bridge over the Silver River in Keweenaw County this summer. The bridge has had one lane closed since fall 2021 due to deterioration of one of the culvert's historic stone retaining walls. A new bridge is planned to be built beginning in April, with work expected to be completed in July.

The new concrete beam bridge will have a larger opening, spanning the entire natural stream bed. The roadway section of the bridge will also be wider, including 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders, providing more space for bicyclists and pedestrians.

During the project, traffic will be detoured for approximately 10 weeks via a posted route on US-41. The M-26 closure will be just west of the western entrance to Brockway Drive, about 10 miles from Copper Harbor.

Throughout work, project detour and closure information will be posted on MDOT's Mi Drive website, and will also be shared on social media.
