Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT’s) Local Agency Program Environmental Services section announces that the new Section 106 process will be implemented on January 3, 2023. Starting then, local agencies will submit Section 106 review requests and supporting documentation for review to MDOT Local Agency Program (LAP) qualified cultural resources staff and will no longer send them to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). New application and submittal forms will be required and will be available from the MDOT forms repository. We will issue a separate listserv when those forms are available.
All projects submitted to the SHPO prior to January 3, 2023 will remain with the SHPO until consultation is completed. MDOT’s LAP Environmental Services staff will review all projects submitted on January 3, 2023 and after. Please address any questions to the LAP Environmental Services Staff (CRS) at MDOT-LAP-Section106-Reviews@michigan.gov.
MDOT will offer two training webinars on the new Section 106 process for all LAP applicants on December 20, 2022 and January 19, 2023. See the training flyer with links to sign up for either date at 2022MDOTLAP-new-section-106-review-process-webinar (mtu.edu). The trainings will be recorded and made available as well.
If you have questions or need more information, please contact Patricia Jo Korzeniewski, LAP Archaeologist, at KorzeniewskiP@michigan.gov, or Brian Grennell, LAP Historian, at GrennellB@michigan.gov.
