Pedestrian bridge information available online
LANSING, Mich. - In the interest of making information more accessible, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has created web pages highlighting pedestrian bridge information.
One page gives access to inspection data on more than 70 Detroit-area pedestrian bridges over state trunkline routes. Reports in PDF form detail the conditions on the bridges from the most recent MDOT inspections.
Additionally, this interactive map shows the location of bridges around the state along with basic information like age, size, condition, and date of last inspection. Pedestrian bridges over MDOT routes can now be displayed by selecting the appropriate tab.
Inspections of pedestrian bridges over State of Michigan routes are performed on a risk-based interval by MDOT, not to exceed 24 months. These inspections are performed to maintain safety and to provide information needed for asset management. Routine inspections of the entire structure may be supplemented by special inspections of bridge components that require more frequent monitoring.
Condition ratings for pedestrian bridges are evaluated following the National Bridge Inventory condition ratings, similar to vehicle bridges. These ratings are based on a 0-9 scale and assigned for each culvert or the deck, superstructure and substructure of each bridge.
