I-69 Rebuilding Michigan Project Update
April 9, 2021
Work to rebuild I-69 from north of Ainger Road to Island Highway officially started March 1. Both northbound and southbound I-69 will be rebuilt in 2021, including the interchange ramps at Cochran Road and M-50. Work will continue on northbound I-69 while maintaining traffic in the southbound lanes. When the northbound lanes are done, work will immediately start on the southbound lanes.
Project Progress Last Month:
I-69 Roadwork:
- Installed temporary pavement markings and set up concrete barrier wall to separate northbound and southbound traffic.
- Pavement removal started; the top layer of concrete pavement has been removed and most of the bottom layer has been removed.
- Enough concrete pavement has been recycled to create the aggregate base material for the new pavement section.
- Storm sewer and culvert crossing work.
- Grading, underdrain placement, new subbase, and aggregate base has been completed from north of Ainger Road to north of Stine Road and from M-50 to Island Highway.
Bridge Work:
- Expansion joint and deck patching is ongoing on the M-78 bridge over I-69.
Project Expectations Next Month:
I-69 Roadwork:
- Complete remaining removal of the bottom layer of concrete pavement.
- Complete underdrain placement, new subbase and aggregate base course from Cochran Road to M-50.
- Grading, underdrain placement, new subbase, and aggregate base course will continue from north of Stine Road to Cochran Road.
- Pavement removal and grading will begin on the northbound I-69 exit and entrance ramps at Cochran Road.
- Storm sewer and culvert crossing work will continue.
- Paving asphalt base course will begin from north of Ainger Road to north of Stine Road and from M-50 to Island Highway.
Bridge Work:
- Complete expansion joint replacement and deck patching on M-78 over I-69.
- Continue pin and hanger replacement, expansion joint replacements, deck patching, and concrete overlay work on N Drive over I-69.
- Start expansion joint replacement, deck patching and concrete overlay work on Baseline Highway over I-69.
- Start painting work at Sherwood Highway over I-69.
How Will Traffic Be Affected?
- One lane will be open in each direction on I-69 using crossovers.
- The northbound I-69 exit and entrance ramps at Cochran Road will be closed and detoured for rebuilding work.
- One lane will be open in each direction on the M-78 bridge over I-69 using a temporary traffic signal.
- Full closure and detour of N Drive and Baseline Highway over I-69.
General Project Information:
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $210 million to rebuild I-69 from south of I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County, to Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County. The project is part of the Rebuilding Michigan program and includes rebuilding 25 miles of I-69, rebuilding six interchanges, rebuilding the 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94, repairing 26 bridges, and making drainage and safety improvements. In addition, crews will repave the Turkeyville Rest Area and carpool lot, as well as the Potterville Rest Area. The project will continue in 2022 and 2023.
Additional Information:
Funding for this project is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure.
