I-69 Rebuilding Michigan Project Update
March 16, 2021
Work to rebuild I-69 from north of Ainger Road to Island Highway officially started March 1. Both northbound and southbound I-69 will be rebuilt in 2021, including the interchange ramps at Cochran Road and M-50. Work will begin on northbound I-69 first while maintaining traffic in the southbound lanes. When the northbound lanes are done, work will immediately start on the southbound lanes.
Project Expectations Next Month:
I-69 Roadwork:
- Install temporary pavement markings and set up concrete barrier wall to separate northbound and southbound traffic.
- Pavement removal will begin. The old concrete pavement will be recycled and reused as an aggregate base material for the new pavement section.
- Storm sewer and culvert crossing work will begin.
- Grading will begin to build the new pavement section.
- Underdrain placement will begin.
- New sand subbase placement will begin.
Bridge Work:
- Expansion joint and deck patching will begin on the M-78 bridge over I-69.
How Will Traffic Be Affected?
- One lane will be open in each direction on I-69 using crossovers.
- Interchange ramps will be open except during short-duration closures that will be announced in advance.
- One lane will be open in each direction on the M-78 bridge over I-69 using a temporary traffic signal.
General Project Information:
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $210 million to rebuild I-69 from south of I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County, to Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County. The project is part of the Rebuilding Michigan Plan and will include rebuilding 25 miles of I-69, rebuilding six interchanges, rebuilding the 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94, repairing 26 bridges, and making drainage and safety improvements.
