I-496 Project Update

Work to rebuild I-496 continues to progress with the rebuilding of westbound I-496. This phase of the project is expected to be completed and westbound I-496 reopened to traffic on Nov. 8.

Project Progress the Last Two Weeks:

  • Mainline westbound I-496 concrete paving has been completed, except for tie-ins at ramp terminals and crossovers.
  • Sign installation has continued.
  • Guardrail installation has continued.
  • Gravel shoulders have been completed.
  • Slope restoration has been completed from I-96 to Waverly Road.
  • The following work has taken place on Waverly Road:
    • The widening at Old Lansing Road has been completed.
    • The final sidewalk work at Old Lansing Road is ongoing.
    • Median work at Lansing Road has been completed.
  • The following bridge work has taken place:
    • Work on the St. Joseph Street bridge over I-496 has been completed.
    • The Canal Road bridge over westbound I-496:
      • Deck repairs are ongoing.
      • Bridge deck joints have been removed and formed up.
    • The westbound I-496 bridge ramp over I-96 to southbound I-96:
      • Bearing realignment work is ongoing.

Project Expectations for the Next Two Weeks:

  • Work on mainline westbound I-496 will be completed and the freeway will reopen to traffic.
  • The following bridge work will take place:
    • Deck patching and deck joint replacements will continue on Canal Road over westbound I-496. 

How Will Traffic Be Affected?

  • Westbound I-496 traffic will remain detoured via Lansing Road to I-96. Westbound I-496 is scheduled to reopen in November.
    • The Creyts Road and Waverly Road ramps to westbound I-496 will be closed.
  • Waverly Road has one lane open in each direction between Lansing Road and St. Joseph Street.
  • Creyts Road has one lane open in each direction over I-496.
  • Canal Road will remain closed and detoured.

General Project Information:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing approximately $60 million to improve I-496 between I-96 and Lansing Road. Work includes rebuilding the freeway and ramps, preventive maintenance on all the bridges in the project area, and making operational improvements to the entrance and exit ramps at the I-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road interchanges.
