I-496 Project Update

Reconstruction of I-496 continues to progress on schedule. Eastbound I-496 will reopen to traffic later this week. After eastbound I-496 is open, westbound I-496 will be closed and reconstruction will begin there immediately with that work expected to last into November. Work during this next phase will progress very similar to the eastbound phase.

Project Progress the Last Two Weeks:

• The slope restoration on eastbound I-496 has been completed.
• All shoulder work on eastbound I-496 has been completed.
• Guardrail installation has been completed on eastbound I-496.
• Pavement markings have been placed on eastbound I-496.
• Signs have been installed on eastbound I-496.
• Shoulder corrugations have been installed on eastbound I-496.
• The following work has taken place on Waverly Road:
  • The shared-use path has been constructed between Lansing Road and Old Lansing Road.
  • The pavement has been removed south of I-496.
  • The storm sewer has been placed.
  • The aggregate base has been placed.
  • Curb and gutter south of the railroad tracks has been placed.
  • The underground work for the signal at I-496 has been completed.
  • The pedestrian signals have been installed at Lansing Road.
• The following bridge work has taken place:
  • The spans have been poured on the Main Street bridge over I-496.
  • An epoxy overlay has been applied to the eastbound I-496 bridge over Waverly Road.
  • Surface coating has been completed on the Canal Road bridge.
  • The Snow Road bridge has been painted.
  • The northbound and southbound Creyts Road bridges have been painted.

Project Expectations for the Next Two Weeks:

• Work on eastbound I-496 will be completed.
• The following work will begin on westbound I-496:
  • Pavement milling and breaking will begin.
  • Delineators and guardrail will be removed.
• The following work will take place on Waverly Road:
  • The aggregate base to I-496 will be finished.
  • All curb and gutter will be installed.
  • Base and leveling courses will be placed.
• The following bridge work will take place:
  • The railings on the I-496 bridge over Waverly Road will be demolished.

How Will Traffic Be Affected?

• Eastbound I-496 traffic will remain detoured via I-96 to Lansing Road. Eastbound I-496 is scheduled to reopen the week of July 20.
  • The I-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road ramps to eastbound I-496 will be closed.
• Westbound I-496 is scheduled to be detoured via Lansing Road to I-96 after eastbound I-496 reopens the week of July 20.
  • The Waverly Road and Creyts Road ramps to westbound I-496 will be closed.
• Main Street:
  • The Main Street bridge over I-496 is detoured via Waverly Road to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
• Waverly Road between Lansing Road and St. Joseph Street:
  • Northbound Waverly Road traffic is detoured via Lansing Road, Main Street, Clare Street, and St. Joseph Street. Two-way Waverly Road traffic is maintained from the westbound entrance/exit ramps to St. Joseph Street.
  • Waverly Road remains closed and detoured in both directions from Lansing Road to the railroad tracks. Work is expected to last 21 calendar days during storm sewer placement and roadway reconstruction.
• Creyts Road over I-496:
  • The southbound lanes of the Creyts Road bridge over I-496 are closed and detoured via westbound I-496, eastbound I-96, and eastbound Lansing Road. The westbound I-496 ramp to southbound Creyts Road is also closed and detoured.

General Project Information:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing approximately $60 million to improve I-496 between I-96 and Lansing Road. Work includes reconstructing the freeway and ramps, preventive maintenance on all the bridges in the project area, and making operational improvements to the entrance and exit ramps at the I-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road interchanges.
