I-94 Project Update

September 30, 2019 – Last week, the contractor continued reconstructing the existing median on I-94 from Sargent Road to M-60. Additionally, the contractor completed the tie-ins for the new eastbound alignment. With the traffic shift complete the contractor has begun demolition of the existing Grand River bridge, as well as the removal westbound I-94. One item to note is traffic will remain in its current configuration between Lansing Avenue and Elm Avenue until summer of 2020 when the new westbound bridge of Grand River is completed.

 

This week, crews will continue reconstructing the Cooper Street interchange. The contractor will continue placement of storm sewer followed closely behind by a grading crew on the north roundabout on Cooper Street as well as the westbound I-94 Cooper Street off and on ramps. From Lansing Avenue to Elm Road, the contractor has begun the removal of existing westbound I-94. Additionally, in this location the contractor will continue the demolition of the existing Grand River structure, as well as begin forming up the footing for the northern abutment on the Cooper Street structure. From Elm Avenue to Sargent Road crews will continue preparation and placement of the new median barrier wall, valley gutter, and shoulders. In the median from West Avenue to M-60, crews will continue placing the new barrier wall and will continue paving the HMA shoulders.

 

Maintenance of traffic for this upcoming week will include, traffic being maintained on I-94 utilizing shoulder closures and reduced speed zones along I-94 between M-60 and Sargent Road. Cooper Street over I-94 will remain closed until mid-December and the eastbound I-94 Cooper Street off-ramp will remain closed until November. The eastbound I-94 Cooper Street on-ramp and the westbound I-94 Cooper Street off-ramp will remain closed until November as well as the Elm Street to westbound I-94 on ramp. The Cooper Street to westbound I-94 on-ramp will be closed until the Spring of 2020.

When Cooper Street reopens the interchange layout will be significantly different. The new interchange layout will consist of two new roundabouts.
