I-94 Project Update

Upcoming this week, night-time single-lane closures on I-94 to complete temporary median resurfacing to maintain traffic. All lanes will be reopened in the morning for traffic. Traffic will be maintained on I-94 utilizing shoulder closures and reduced speed zones along I-94 between M-60 and Sargent Road. Cooper Street over I-94 will remain closed until November and the eastbound I-94 Cooper Street on and off-ramps will remain closed until mid-August. The eastbound I-94 Elm Avenue off-ramp will be closed until mid-August as well. The westbound I-94 Cooper Street on and off-ramps will remain closed until November.

An I-94 Construction Video has been uploaded to YouTube and provides further information about the ongoing project.

August 5, 2019 – Last week, the contractor continued reconstructing the existing median on I-94 from Sargent Road to Elm Avenue and began the reconstruction of the median on I-94 from West Avenue to M-60.

This week, crews will continue reconstructing the Cooper Street interchange. The contractor will begin placing the new concrete valley gutter along eastbound I-94. From Elm Avenue to Sargent Road crews will finish placing the new median drainage followed closely by a crew placing aggregate base in preparation for the new median barrier wall, valley gutter, and shoulders. In the median from West Avenue to M-60, crews have begun placing aggregate base in preparation for the new barrier wall and shoulders. Additionally, the contractor plans to begin barrier wall removal near Lansing Avenue, to maintain traffic while completing the tie-ins for the new eastbound I-94 alignment.

When Cooper Street reopens the interchange layout will be significantly different. The new interchange layout will consist of two new roundabouts. To provide more information on roundabouts a link to the Roundabout Information located on MDOT’s website will provide answers to questions about roundabouts and how to safely navigate one.
