I-94 Project Update

Upcoming this week, single-lane closures will be utilized on Cooper St. from Porter Street to Ganson Street to complete HMA resurfacing. Traffic will be maintained on I-94 utilizing shoulder closures and reduced speed zones along I-94 between M-60 and Sargent Road. Cooper Street over I-94 will remain closed until November and the eastbound I-94 Cooper Street on and off-ramps will remain closed until mid-August. The eastbound I-94 Elm Ave. off-ramp will be closed until mid-August as well. The westbound I-94 Cooper Street on and off-ramps will remain closed until November.

An I-94 Construction Video has been uploaded to YouTube and provides further information about the ongoing project.

July 22, 2019 – Last week, the contractor completed placing continuously reinforced concrete pavement on eastbound I-94. Additionally, the contractor continued reconstructing the existing median on I-94 from Sargent Road to Elm Avenue and began removal of the existing median barrier wall from West Ave to M-60.

This week, crews will continue reconstructing the Cooper Street interchange. The contractor will begin placing concrete for the new eastbound I-94 on ramp from M-106 and begin pouring the concrete shoulders for eastbound I-94. From Elm Ave. to Sargent Rd. crews will continue placing the new median drainage followed closely by a crew placing aggregate base in preparation for the new median barrier wall and shoulders. In the median from West Ave. to M-60, crews will continue removal of the existing barrier wall to begin reconstruction of the median in this location. Additionally, the contractor will continue milling and resurfacing Cooper Street from Porter St. to Ganson St.

When Cooper Street reopens the interchange layout will be significantly different. The new interchange layout will consist of two new roundabouts. To provide more information on roundabouts a link to the Roundabout Information located on MDOT’s website will provide answers to questions about roundabouts and how to safely navigate one.
