Jason Bodell receives top employee award
from the Michigan Department of Transportation

August 6, 2018 -- Jason Bodell of Grand Ledge has received the 2018 Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Director's Award - the department's highest honor for outstanding service. MDOT established the annual award nearly 30 years ago to recognize employees who exhibit leadership and exemplary public service.

"At MDOT, safety is always our top priority," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "With an unwavering commitment to the Toward Zero Deaths initiative, Jason has improved traffic safety throughout his region. Now, with his new position as operations engineer with the Statewide Transportation Operations Center, he will be improving traffic safety statewide. While I am proud of our entire workforce, Director's Award recipients like Jason stand out because they are nominated by their peers for this special recognition."

Bodell was honored in the professional category. Out of concern for startling secondary crash statistics, he devised an innovative way to address the issue in his region. Seeking input from local emergency responders, Bodell created a list of necessary crash site equipment. He then sought management approval for the purchase of a trailer and took the lead in outfitting it with all the necessary equipment. This trailer now assists the Otsego County Road Commission and local emergency responders in redirecting traffic at crash sites and assists law enforcement in crash scene investigations.

The Director's Award program represents the various work categories within the department. While MDOT employees nominate their peers, committees comprised of workers from each category make the final recommendations to the department.
