MDOT safety manager honored for commitment to traffic safety

Mark Bott, a longtime traffic and safety engineer with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), will be honored during the Governor’s Traffic Safety Advisory Commission (GTSAC) annual awards presentation Wednesday at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing.

Bott will receive the Richard H. Austin Long-Term Traffic Safety Award, which is presented to individuals or organizations who have made significant long-term contributions to the field of traffic safety.

The GTSAC honors organizations, programs and individuals for outstanding contributions to traffic safety. The awards ceremony is part of the 23rd Annual Michigan Traffic Safety Summit. Four long-term awards, six Outstanding Traffic Safety Achievement awards and one student award are being presented.

Bott has focused on traffic safety since 1989, when he joined the MDOT. Early in his career, Bott coordinated traffic signal studies and managed the operation of 500 signals. Bott became supervising engineer of the Traffic Control Unit in 1997, overseeing a staff of 25 responsible for establishing the design and standard application of signing, pavement markings and traffic control signals on the state trunkline system.

Bott manages the MDOT’s Traffic and Safety Section, which emphasizes the integration of senior mobility, pedestrian and bicyclists and various systemic safety initiatives into everyday activities to reduce fatalities and injuries as part of MDOT’s Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) activities. Bott’s leadership has helped the development of tools and resources under the TZD effort to educate the public about traffic crashes. This includes the fatality message on MDOT’s dynamic message boards and the release of TZD videos.

The GTSAC was formed in 2002 to serve as the state’s forum for identifying key traffic safety challenges and developing and implementing plans to address those issues. The GTSAC includes representatives from the MDOT and the departments of: Education, Health and Human Services, State and State Police, as well as Office of the Governor, Office of Services to the Aging and Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. There are also three representatives from local government appointed by the governor.
