Weather pending, eastbound 100th Street

bridge over US-131 will reopen next week

Fast facts:

- The 100th Street bridge over US-131 was struck by two semi-trucks on Jan. 12.

- The north and south fascia beams were damaged and removed.

- The structural integrity of the bridge can safely support one lane of traffic.

January 26, 2018 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with the Kent County Road Commission, will open one eastbound lane on the 100th Street bridge over US-131 in Byron Township by the end of next week. The bridge was damaged when two semi-trucks with over-height shipping containers struck the overpass. Once barricades and other traffic control devices are in place, the one eastbound lane will be opened; the bridge will remain closed to westbound traffic.

"We’ve performed detailed analysis to determine the bridge is structurally sound to maintain one lane of traffic," said MDOT Grand Region Bridge Engineer Jon Bruinsma. "Bridge design plans and funding are still being worked out for a long-term solution."

Eastbound 100th Street traffic will be maintained due to predominant traffic movement. Westbound traffic should head north on US-131, west on 84th Street and then back south on US-131 to westbound 100th Street.
