MDOT building new pedestrian bridge over M-5

in Oakland County

COUNTY:

Oakland

HIGHWAY:

M-5

CLOSEST COMMUNITY:

Charter Township of Commerce

START DATE:

Late January 2018

ESTIMATED END DATE:

Mid-August 2018

PROJECT DETAILS:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $4.5 million to build a new pedestrian bridge over M-5 between Maple Road and Pontiac Trail. MDOT has partnered with the Charter Township of Commerce on this project, who is contributing $1.1 million toward aesthetic upgrades, including special lighting and bridge railings.

This bridge will be located just north of Maple Road and will connect the popular Michigan Air Line Trail, allowing pedestrians to safely cross the highway.

For the safety of work crews and drivers, concrete barriers will be placed on the shoulders of M-5 just north of Maple Road to separate the work zone from traffic.

TRAFFIC IMPACT:

Two lanes will be maintained in each direction on M-5 for most of the project. Since the majority of work will take place outside the shoulders, continuous shoulder closures are planned for the duration of this project. MDOT plans to close M-5 for two weekends between Maple Road and Pontiac Trail for bridge beam setting and other bridge work. Occasional single-lane closures are also anticipated.

Work will begin outside the shoulders with excavations for foundations. The first weekend closure is scheduled in the spring to set bridge beams. The second weekend closure is expected to be in July to remove construction materials and will require equipment on the roadway under the bridge.
