M-53 roadway modifications in Bruce Township

require speed limit changes

COUNTY:

Macomb

HIGHWAY:

M-53

CLOSEST COMMUNITIES:

City of Romeo

Bruce Township

LOWER SPEED LIMIT BEGINS:

Friday, Dec. 1, 2017

PROJECT DETAILS:

The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) has completed a roadway modification project along M-53 between 32 Mile Road and 34 Mile Road in northern Macomb County to allow access to and from 33 Mile Road and McKay Road.

The modifications include adding a new right-turn lane on northbound M-53 leading to a newly constructed connector leading to and from 33 Mile and McKay roads. Crossovers were also added to M-53 both north and south of 33 Mile Road.

TRAFFIC DETAILS:

The new connector will only allow northbound M-53 access. Southbound M-53 traffic will use the new crossover south of 33 Mile Road to access northbound M-53. 33 Mile Road and McKay Road traffic heading for southbound M-53 will need to get on northbound M-53 and use the new crossover north of 33 Mile Road in order to access southbound M-53.

MCDR, in partnership with Bruce Township and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), made the M-53 modifications in response to planned developments and future area growth. Due to the presence of the new accesses off M-53 and the expected traffic generated by them, MDOT, in coordination with the Michigan State Police, will be reducing the current speed limit of 70 mph to 55 mph between 32 Mile Road and Van Dyke Road, south of 34 Mile Road.

In addition, MCDR has added a roundabout at the 33 Mile Road/McKay Road intersection that is expected to help safely accommodate the higher traffic volumes coming to and from the area.
