UPDATES:
As part of ongoing work on M-59 (Hall Road), crews will close the Schoenherr Road intersection beginning Saturday for the first of two 10-day closures. This will allow crews to complete the work through the right two lanes of both the eastbound and westbound sides of M-59 across Schoenherr Road before the July Fourth holiday. The inside two lanes of both the eastbound and westbound sides of M-59 will be completed during the second closure, expected to begin in the middle of July. Access will be maintained to all businesses on Schoenherr Road during the closure at M-59.
Beginning today, paving on eastbound M-59 will occur over the next two weeks using a new and innovative technique that will improve the long-term condition of the roadway by paving across 36 feet instead of the typical one lane (usually 12 feet) at a time. This will eliminate some of the joints where water seeps in and affects the wear/condition of the roadway.
Three lanes of eastbound M-59 remain open from M-53 to Garfield Road; westbound M-59 has three lanes open from Garfield Road to M-53. The lane closures in these areas are in place to allow crews to safely work in the two right lanes of M-59 and address the many business driveways, access points, and cross streets in each direction.
The project is on schedule and work is being performed in multiple locations. Driveway closures to businesses continue to be coordinated to allow at least one access point.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) thanks motorists, residents, and business owners for their patience and understanding during this much needed work on one of Macomb County's most significant roadways.
WEBSITE UPDATES:
The M-59 project website, www.movingmacomb.org, now features a link for the average travel time for weekdays and weekends to aid in planning commute times through construction zone. Motorists are also reminded to check the website for current project details and updates.
PROJECT DETAILS:
MDOT is investing $60 million to reconstruct 3.7 miles of M-59 (Hall Road) between M-53 to Garfield Road in 2017 and between Garfield Road and Romeo Plank Road in 2018.
During this first year, work includes replacing all concrete with new asphalt, improving drainage, upgrading ramps and sidewalks to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and adding new sidewalk to fill in the missing gaps along M-59. New modern traffic signals, sign replacement, enhanced landscaping, and other aesthetic improvements are planned as well. During the second year, work will continue on both sides of M-59 between Garfield and Romeo Plank roads.

SAFETY BENEFITS:
This project will maintain safety with a smoother driving surface, improved drainage, and updated road signs. Pedestrian access will be improved as well.
