Despite closures, Mackinac Bridge traffic still up in March
April 11, 2017 – Despite several high wind warnings, two partial closures and one full closure due to falling ice, 220,533 vehicles crossed the Mackinac Bridge in March, an increase of 2.4 percent or 5,177 vehicles over March last year.
Passenger vehicles towing trailers led the increase with 2,581 more vehicles, up 27.9 percent from March 2016. Commercial truck traffic was 23,765 vehicles, up 10.5 percent from 21,504 vehicles in March 2016.
Total revenues collected for March totaled $1.41 million, an increase of 6.6 percent from $1.32 million in March 2016. Regular fare passenger vehicles generated 40.1 percent of total revenues, Mac Pass holders 6.2 percent, and commercial vehicles 47.6 percent.
The MBA’s sole source of funding is from tolls and fees collected at the Mackinac Bridge. All revenue collected is used to maintain, operate, and protect the 59-year-old National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
