MDOT video: West Michigan officials ride the I-96/Cascade Road DDI Fast facts: - The new I-96 Cascade Road diverging diamond interchange (DDI) opened one month ago in Grand Rapids Township. - Motorists have quickly found the DDI to be safer and easier to get around. - The first DDI in the U.S. opened in June 2009. Michigan’s first DDI opened last year in Auburn Hills. December 19, 2016 -- The new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at Cascade Road and I-96 in Grand Rapids Township has been open for one month and drivers have quickly learned that the new configuration is safer and easy to navigate. To get an outside perspective on how the new interchange is being received by local residents, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) rigged up their GoPros and rode along with State Rep. Chris Afendoulis (73rd District) and Grand Rapids Charter Township Supervisor Michael DeVries. This video on MDOT's YouTube channel shows the history of the busy interchange, the benefits of the new configuration, and the ride along with the two locally elected officials: https://youtu.be/BNGXHKpRcr8. "We've heard nothing but good things from our residents and drivers," said Rep. Afendoulis. "It not only functions more efficiently, it is also safer for both motorists and pedestrians." "We are thrilled with the new interchange," said DeVries. "Investing in innovative transportation solutions benefits everyone." The first DDI in the United States opened in June 2009 at the I-44/MO-13 interchange in Springfield, Missouri. Since then, 80 more DDIs have opened throughout the country, including two here in Michigan, with the first opening last year in Auburn Hills on University Drive over I-75.
