- AAA Michigan estimates more than 1 million motorists will be using Michigan roads and bridges during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

August 30, 2016 -- To make travel more convenient for motorists throughout Michigan over the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will remove traffic restrictions on 92 of 131 active projects statewide. AAA Michigan estimates 1 million travelers will be using Michigan roads and bridges during the holiday weekend.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, MDOT will suspend construction wherever possible on state roads and bridges. MDOT oversees nearly 10,000 miles of roads designated as I, M and US routes. While construction may be suspended for the weekend, motorists are advised that equipment and temporary traffic configurations, like minor shifts, may remain in place, requiring motorists to adjust their speed and pay attention.

"For most of us, this weekend is a last chance to hit the road to enjoy the end of summer before school starts," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "To help ease travel, most of our work zones will be inactive, but we have no choice but to leave some lane restrictions in effect this weekend. Please be alert, avoid distractions and use extra caution driving in work zones - make it to your Labor Day destination safely."

The following 39 work zones will have active traffic restrictions in place during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The list is current as of Aug. 30, and is subject to change. For the most up-to-date information on MDOT projects, go to the Mi Drive traffic website and app at: www.michigan.gov/drive. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location.
