BACKGROUND:
The study conducted for replacing the I-94 bridges over Pipestone Road in Benton Township is near completion, and MDOT will be providing information and collecting comments on the preferred alternative.
A series of stakeholder meetings were held to engage residents, business owners and local officials in determining preferences for replacing the bridges and improving the ramps and intersections. Construction could start as early as 2022, and the anticipated $33 million investment would include replacing the bridges, reconstructing 1 mile of I-94, and improving the ramps at Pipestone Road.
"It is exciting to consider these improvements for this thriving commercial area. They will certainly benefit the public for the life of these bridges and beyond," said Kyle Rudlaff, MDOT project manager. "We've worked closely with the community and the consultant to make sure we're designing a project that will serve all kinds of traffic and growth well into the future."
The current bridges were built in 1960, and the new bridges would have an expected life of 75 years. Pipestone Road recently was classified as a National Highway System local route, so the new bridges would be nearly 2 feet higher over Pipestone Road, providing a vertical clearance of 16 feet, 3 inches. Also included in the future bridge project is building a continuous center left-turn lane between the interchange ramps to improve safety and traffic capacity for Pipestone Road. The proposed designed also provides accommodations for nonmotorized and pedestrian traffic.
Project and study information, including graphics of the preferred alternative concept, is available on the MDOT website: www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9621_11058-302814--,00.html.
