I-96 at US-23, Livingston County
On Thursday, October 15, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., there will be a double lane closure on eastbound I-96 at US-23. In addition, the ramp from southbound US-23 to eastbound I-96 will be closed, with traffic detoured to Grand River Avenue.
The closures are needed so crews can shift eastbound traffic to the new lanes of the freeway. The switch to Stage 2 of the project is 4 weeks ahead of schedule.
After the switch, there will be two lanes of eastbound I-96 traffic maintained on the new express lanes and one lane maintained on the existing roadway. The existing lanes of I-96 will become collector-distributor (CD) lanes as a way to increase safety and mobility at the interchange, in particular for ramp traffic.
The switch for westbound I-96 traffic to the new lanes has yet to be determined. It is expected the switch may occur Sunday, October 18, or Monday, October 19.
