Fish crib structures to be placed in Michigamme Reservoir to provide habitat

The Department of Natural Resources today announced it will assist Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County with placing fish crib structures in the Michigamme Reservoir (Iron County) Saturday, March 7.

Example of a fish crib structureFish cribs are man-made structures composed of natural materials that are used to provide additional habitat for fish. They will be constructed using logs and slab wood in a “log cabin” fashion to create areas of refuge for multiple fish species. Locations for these structures were chosen this past fall. The cribs will be assembled on the ice at these specific GPS locations, where they will sink this spring as the ice melts.

The DNR’s Fisheries Division has partnered with Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County for the past two years to conduct this project. The division provides technical guidance and a limited amount of manual labor.

The fish crib projects are made possible through grant funding from We Energies and contributions from multiple volunteers and local businesses. Some of these businesses include: The Way Dam Resort, providing a landing area and base of operation; J&K Logging, providing slab wood for the structures; and Nylund Pasties for feeding the workforce.
