Detroit-area choirs sing 'Praise on the Isle' at Belle Isle Park Aug. 24
Detroit residents and visitors to Belle Isle are invited to “Praise on the Isle” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24 at Belle Isle Park’s Sunset Point. Presented by the Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee, the event features choirs from Detroit area churches including Galilee Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Greater Christ Baptist Church.
“‘Praise on the Isle’ promotes family and community involvement on Belle Isle,” said Rev. V. Lonnie Peek, Jr., vice chair of the Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee. “Belle Isle is the people’s island, and this event encompasses that truth, bringing the community together for an enjoyable Sunday on the island.”
According to Michele Hodges, Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee chair and president of the Belle Isle Conservancy, "Praise on the Isle" is one of many must-see events happening on the island this summer and fall.
“Whether you’re 1 or 100, whether you’re visiting the island with family, friends or individually, there will be an event here for you,” she said.
For a complete list of events happening on Belle Isle, visit the Belle Isle Conservancy’s calendar of events at www.belleisleconservancy.org.
Many indoor island attractions are also open on weekends and free to the public, including:
- Belle Isle Aquarium, which has extended its days of operation to include Sunday. The aquarium is now open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.
- Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday
- Dossin Great Lakes Museum, administered by the Detroit Historical Society, is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
- Belle Isle Nature Zoo, administered by the Detroit Zoological Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
The $11 Recreation Passport is required for access to Belle Isle Park and is valid until the vehicle’s next license plate registration renewal date. The Passport requirement is being phased in gradually at Belle Isle Park. Vehicles will not need the Passport during the first year of state management until their next license plate registration renewal date. For example, if the vehicle license plate registration renewal date is in September 2014, then the Passport is not needed on that vehicle to enter Belle Isle until September. Once a full year has cycled (February 2015), all vehicles entering the park must have a Recreation Passport.
Belle Isle Park visitors can purchase their Recreation Passport on Belle Isle at the White House (administrative building) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, at the mobile park information booth located to the left of the park entrance or from the Secretary of State during license plate registration renewal.
Additional information about Belle Isle Park, the Recreation Passport on Belle Isle and the Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee – which advises the state on implementation of improvements, master planning and public safety for Belle Isle Park – is available at www.BelleIslePark.org.
