Chairs installed at the Belle Isle Park Scott Memorial Fountain
The Belle Isle Conservancy announced today that chairs have been installed around the Scott Memorial Fountain. The historic fountain, which now operates seven days a week through the summer thanks to a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, has quickly become a gathering place for visitors to Belle Isle Park.
The Conservancy worked with Project for Public Spaces to identify placemaking opportunities that would encourage people to gather comfortably and enjoy the spectacular surroundings. The DNR's historic architect advised on how to preserve the character of the fountain, choosing a design and color consistent with the wrought iron and other design elements found throughout the island.
The chairs were funded thanks to the generous support from Conway MacKenzie, Frasco Caponigro Wineman & Scheible PPLC and Terry and Linda Theodore.
"It has been truly remarkable to see the community respond so positively to the Scott Fountain this summer," said Alicia Masse, managing director of Alderney Advisors and Belle Isle Conservancy board member. "This Detroit icon was always intended to be a gathering place, and with the installation of these chairs we hope that it will be once again."
The fountain runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily through Labor Day. In the event of severe weather, including lightning, the fountain does not operate.
